One of my breeders acted very strange today,it stared jumping around and turning in circles in a very iratic way as if something was iritating the hell out of it,it even spooked the rest of my birds, this is the first time this has happend and it happend twice today, could it be mite or lice or some kind of insect that might be in its feathers or is it something els?

Are you sure it was just not a cock driving a hen?
Is this bird mated up yet? Was it making any sounds?

Hey oldfart, yes the bird has a mate, infact they do have youngsters at the moment, but it was defntly not driving any hen or making any sound, something was defntly wrong at that time, the bird acted so iratic that it even knockd itself against stuff,it happend twice and lasted about 3 seconds each,i have never seen this before in a bird,i thought maybe it could be lice or something sins i havnt treated the birds yet 4 that, its a well breed bird, dean forster strain, the birds father was the nest mate to 2006 uk national champion roller,i have the bird for 2 months now and this hasnt happnd b4.

I don't know then. If it is a loose or mites you will be able to see them. When you lift his wing look quick as a loose will scurry back into the joint under his wing or tail really fast. Mites will show up along the feather vain as black marks but not like a sex linked ticking. They lie in line with the feather shaft or vain. I hope you find out what is bothering him. Let us know, please.

come to think of it i have seen loose on 1 or 2 of my other birds in the last few days, but havnt got a chance to sort it out,i will have a look in the morning and then treat the birds aswell, but could a loose irritate a bird that much so that it acts iratic?thanks for the reply oldfart,i appreciate it.

In the sixties I had a common pigeon get into my loft and it gave my birds pigeon louses. Nasty little bugs and when they would bite the birds would jump and twist about. Seven dust 5%, will kill them and mites also. Good luck with them.

When the bird was eating was he pecking for the food and missing it?
Was his head twisting around whilst he was doing this?
I no a guy some years ago that had birds with these symptoms and it was that paramixa or whateve its calld.
Somone please spell it for me.LOL
Good look and hope you find the reason.
I would quarentine the bird untill its been checkd over by somone with the knowledge in them areas.
