Damn Im getting hammered.............. O/K Wenesday night I hear a noise in the loft , I go to check it out with a bat in hand , Open the door and a damn skunk in my loft ... chewing on some babies. WTF I live in Sacramento never thought a skunk would pop up , so I lost 4 babies Im pissed but what do I do , hit the thing ,nop shit Im scared too ...lol so I started banging on the wall (from outside ) and it came out look as nothing happened and went throught a hole in the gate. Today I let the A team up ... as soon as they got out of the the box , a hawk came in and grabed one and carried it to a tree down the street. 10 minutes into the fly the birds where pretty high and all I can see is a BOP diving through them over and over till it took one down. Now the birds are comeing in, close to an hour in the air 1 by 1 they land on the loft...and pow right in front of me one gets hit but gets away and flies off( he hasnt came back yet) . Wow Im a marked man lost a total 7 birds in 2 days ..so much for the FF Im locking down until the mid Sept. Talk about bad luck ...

Larry, lock em up for a week and see what happens, the main thing is you don't want that Coop honing in on your loft as a dinner bell. As for the skunk, if he turns around and lifts his tail it means that he wants you to tickle him, they are cute that way. ---------- Just my Opinion Scott

LMAO...But I think it had "Spong Bob" boxers on ..The thing that sucks is that it got the young from the pair I got from you. Did the skunk come with those birds?

Larry do you have a pellet gun with 1000+fps with a scoop? If not get one shoot for the back of the head should kill that skunk first shot. make sure your scoop is sighted in practise till you can get a group of three rounds in a grouping the size of a quarter.Good Luck JDA

Larry, I thought I was the only one that got my birds hit badly...I'm in the south sacramento area and I Lock down my birds for a week and flew them and still get hit...I try 3 weeks lock down and same results...Started with 32 young and down to 16...I got about 13 young ready to trained and 8 more coming...I don't know what to do with them young as I cannot fly them (BOP)...I'm guessing Lockdown until after September... ---------- Home of the Admiration Of Flying Performing Pigeon...

Shop around for those air rifle. Some of them kick hard and knock the scope out of wack even with the scope stopper. Then you need to rescope it every time. It is a pain. Don't forget to purchase the night light with it if you need to use it at night. Also consider trapping him. You can buy a trap from Tractor Supply Company and the trap can be used for other pests.

Larry and Lil Jess....if you lock down and you still get hit...make sure the Hawks cant see your birds....If you have fly pens or your lofts are open so that the hawks can see the birds...they will keep coming back....if you loft is open...you need to cover it or throw tarps over them...anything.....when I got hit...I lock down and close up the loft..so you cant see any birds...then the hawk will move on..if the BOP has killed there....and it can still see the birds...then it will keep coming back to LOOK!!

Hi Lary, becareful with the skunks. I had trapped one last year and it sprayed the cage and it still stinks near that cage today one year later, no kidding. I jumped on the computer and it said to mix peroxide with baking soda and liquid soap and I did but it did not wash it all away.
I too have had aprx 15 kit birds dead to a racoon. I cought the ravenous beast last night and it weighed about 45 to 50 lbs. I tried all kinds of bait and the dead birds and he was getting the dead birds out with out setting the trap. I had three traps set and finally cought it. I was going nuts over losing good flying rollers to him. I could not put plywood over the kit box floor or it would have gone after my breeder birds. I would not know he killed a bird until I opened up the kit box and there was a kit bird with out leggs and no head. I would refridgerate it until night time and hope to catch and finally did after two weeks of this. I had put a trail of cat food going into the cage and it worked along with wire holding the dead bird in so it could not just stick his head in and eat and run with out setting off the trap. I'm there with you Larry! But the BOP are worse. Definately lock up for a week to 10 days. Good luck, Bill C

Hi Bill and Larry. Sorry to hear about your troubles. Hopefully it will get better. Bill, seems you will be better off since that racoon has been caught.I hope it was a bachelor so none of your other birds will fall prey to more of them. Paul, what time is the release on Sunday? I am putting the tires on the bike today so I feel safe to ride again. See you sunday Paul.

Paul, I had a meeting last night and didnt read your post till today. As soon as I read it I went down to close the sun cages so the birds arent visable ...and the damn coop is sitting on a tree branch in between the two kit boxes. Thanks for the advise as I can see your point.Ahh what time do you plan on letting them up, and how many kits are u going to fly ? I have prior engagements for Sunday morning and can make it around 10 If thats not to late .
Bill, I was just saying to myself that you got to be having some kind of preditors around your area also . Glad you got that sucker ..45 plus pounds ..wow .. like I said I dont want no parts of that skunk at all ..lol..Im just going to tighten down the camp and wait them out .
This damn hawk is pissin me off thoe!!

I will put one of my younger kits up first....at about 830...Then the B-team and then the A-team.....The A-team had some birds come down early and some out birds due to the moult..but the others were doing pretty good....I had about 6 birds with the last flights about half way out and in blood..so they were hurting....
Jeff...sounds good man....glad you FINALLY got your tires....I need to get a new front before Winter...anyway....you all are more then happy to come out....I am putting them up at 845...so just show up...or give me a call to make sure nothing changed......Plus...ist been awhile Jeff.....
Jeff...do you have any bands left....I am running low...and the birds you are going to get from me....we can just band them with your band and I will put my personalized band on the other leg....

Larry....
Thats good that you cover them....with BOP..out of sight....out of mind....even though you lock down...the BOP has taken a bird and they will KEEP coming back until the food source is gone....if they can see your birds....they will keep coming back and sit there all morning WAITING for one to escape....it will then go and get a meal when it gets hungry....and then it will come back again and stare at the pigeons under glass...LOL

O\K ..I need some advise on what to do ? my son calls me on my way home from Pauls house , saying a kid found our bird down the street on the ground and its bleeding . This was the other bird that was took by the BOP up high . It got away some how, but the leg is cut bad the leg broke and all.
What do you think ? good bird but I wont be able to stock ?Will it spin the same? Will it even kit now? are some of my questions . I think cull ....to many what ifs . Larry

I have three birds now with only one leg that was able to fly up to a perch and stay there. I will still fly them out. If they are cocks they will always be a kit bird if good. If they are hens, they could still mate and lay eggs but if you have better birds she could always be replaced.
I still breed from one hen from my Borges birds that lost a legg two years ago to a possum and she lays and they are fertilized and the babies are healthy as the cock does most of the feeding anyway after two weeks.
So your bird could turn out good and make a good kit bird as long as they can fly. It will still kit if it is only missing one leg and no wing problem. Might feed it and rest it a week and the drag is you will have to feed them seperately sometimes to stay in good shape as the others will be faster. But she will learn not to move around and stay put to get the most feed. Bill C ( you are welcome to cull if you choose that it is too much trouble)

Bill...If you were to build a metal divider for a shelf to rest on under the floor, I thank you have 1" wire,That would stop your problem.
1. 1"wire floor. 2. Make a shelf for holding droppings that will slide out with a floor for easey cleaning.
3. Make a frame with a cut to size metal bottom that you would mount under the shelf.JDA
