---------- A friend called yesterday with a problem. He is getting his kit ready for the 11 bird FF and the birds are flying for two hours or more. They are all old birds. Birds are flying a decent height and getting decent action at good depth and quality. He is feeding them wheat and milo, I think 50/50. Less than 1 teaspoon each. Any suggestions? He has 1 week before the fly. Thanks

Not sure I see the problem. If they are flying 2 hrs in the summer heat, it sounds to me like they are very well conditioned. My A kit routinely flys 1 1/2 to 2 hrs in the summer. If they are flying at a good height and he is getting decent action with good depth and quality, I fail to see the problem.

He must be giving them vitamins and minerals in their water. He needs to stop doing that while prepping the kit. He would not be able to manage their feed ration and will screw him up. The water should be tap water only.

I think he wants to get the fly time down for a couple of reasons. One is he has 3 more kits to fly and time is an issue and a little worried about an overfly.

It is obvious that there is nothing he can do about his problem and should just concede the fly. LOL

From what you wrote (Wheat/Milo) it sounds like they are too fly fit and probably feel lite in the hand, once mine feel this way it is time to lock em up and pound wt. on them, fat men don't run marithons for a reason.

It's a little too late for this needed at-least 1 week to drop them. You don't want to really play with new things before a fly. But what he could do after the fly and good luck on him on the fly.

When this happens usually we think we are feeding them too much as the reason they fly too long. Actually they have too much muscle and no fat and the less you feed them the stronger they are getting to a point.

He needs to feed them regular pigeon food with corn for 4 days all they want, no flying and nothing added in the water. The 5th day I would not feed them and 6th day fly. This will get some fat on them and drop the time they fly. He will just have to get them back to the time he wants

Great suggestion Jay. My mix is 3 scoops wheat/3 scoops milo/1 scoop safflower. Seems to work pretty well. I have increased the safflower slightly right now to help them through the molt.
