Hi
I have a MRPC roller hen (2006 bird) and it doesn't roll. It will just fly around and glide. Is this pigeon worth keeping or shall I remove it. Its young I bred this year are the same as its mum. The cock bird I paired it to is a real good roller, I had a young bird from it last year and it was a very good roller but was paired to a different hen that rolled.
Also when a roller claps when flying, what does this mean??
I would appreciate the help.
Many thanks

We all breed culls and even out of are best pairs. That is why is a must to prove them out in the air before breeding to get are % a little higher.
Also we take notes on how long it took to fully developed or come in to the roll to pair it up right. I will never breed together two birds that came in to the roll late unless they are my best in the loft. The offspring usually will be also very late or more.
Either the 06 hen produces birds that come in to the roll very late or is not a good producer. Also she was probably never flown till she came in to the roll and was stock to breed. That is why she doesn't roll yet, she might if you keep flying her hard. If I take out of some of my breeders to put back in the air they will kit and roll again because they were flown for almost 2 years.
What I would do is look for a good hen for that cock that you could see in the air perform. If you get a hen that came in early you could have your birds come in sooner.
Hope this helps

Hi roller alley
The 06 hen bird I am talking about, I got it from the petshop. I know I shouldn't have but it was when I was starting up. I have learnt from my mistakes and won't use the petshop to get rollers anymore.

TIME>>>TIME>>>TIME>...you have to give the birds time...first if an 06 hen has not been flying and then you try and fly her..it takes awhile for her to get back in shape....second...give young birds a chance....My first hatches from Jan...are just coming into the roll....and they are 7 months old....and they are going through the moult...not uncommon for young birds to go through different phases and for birds into the moult to shut down....TIME TIME TIME...you have to have patience....you should post this next year...after the young birds have some time under there belt...

Yeah I know it takes time fhtfire, the hen is starting fly good now compared to before I use to let it out. I will just have to wait and see if that roll ever happens.
I am just asking this because I will be sorting out my rollers soon. Just want to seperate the good ones from the poor ones.
Thanks

True roller alley. Once I joined the uk roller forum I was given good advice to stay clear of petshops (in the uk they call it cages). You cant see the pigeon flying so it could be a rubbish or a good one.

People say if a roller as got the abilitey to roll then nothing can get in its way to stop it? I think that is total rubbish. I have had birds that when I first broke off I never seen them roll. But once they were flying fit and settled they started to perform. And then I have had rollers that have been great and made one mistake and had a bang. And I have never seen that bird roll again(NEVER). You can see it in a roller if its to scared to roll and any roller man should beable to see this in there birds. As for clapping I have a youngster that does it then puts in a fantastick roll after woods. Its not somthing I like. I prefere the roller that goes over and stops like it has hit an invisible floor in the sky then pulls out facing towards the kit and returns to its rank. Yes I do have some birds that do this but would love to see a full 20 kit team do it(NOW THAT WOULD BE MY DREAM TEAM)But hey we all wish for somthing that we carnt have dont we?.LOL. So thats my view on this post. I two years ago didnt no what I was looking for in my birds. I still have the same birds I started with today as I was lucky to get some help and advice with the birds but I couldnt see things then in my birds what I can see today. I have learnd so much. From my birds and the guys on this website. I would never have pulld a roller from the team bcause it wouldnt kit/ If a bird would land early then so be it the rest would land and tommorow another day. But now these birds are taken away not to return. I was scared to part with birds before today but now no if they have to go they have to go. You have to take away the problems before you can move forward and if you think(THINK) that hen you have (DARKHORSE)aint good anougth then you decide its futre. Sooner than later. good look harrison hull uk.

I have a roller that doesn't roll too and the reason it won't roll is because it can't! It was a deep roller and lost control, hit the ground and broke its back. The bird no longer has control of its tail feathers and can't lift its tail to go into a roll and never will. it flies really good, but has become an out bird, still because it was a top notch bird I have bred from it and the youngsters fly quite good. Not to say this is the reason, but if you hold the bird and tilt it backwards as though it were going into a roll the tail should go up, if it doesn't then chances are it hurt its back in a roll down. Darkhorse, I would say that If you have flown the hen for more than about 3 or 4 months, and she hasn't rolled it is time to dump her. I especially dislike the wing popping too.. It is something I associate with street pigeons and common tumblers.
Unless you want more of the same, I would suggest disposing of the bird. You took a bird which was already discarded by another breeder and it has now become your problem. It would a be much better idea and well worth the trouble in the long run to acquire the best spinner you can find from a reliable source. Paul G

That is always a question you should ask yourself if you are going to by birds that you havent seen fly(ROLL)??? Why are these people selling the birds in the first place? Especialy from pet shops. Its just a place were people off load there rubbish to make a couple of dollers. No one will buy them had they seen them fly and the guy would rather sell them then cull them. Commen sence realy. I myself will no longer off load my (rubish) due to the fact that there is a good chance of the birds coming back to my house infected ect... Its a mistake I have had to learn by the hard way. And whatever you do (NEVER) cell/give birds to anybody who live close to you unless you are (100%) sure they are genuine pigeon fanciers and have a clean place. There is some days i have to keep my birds in bcause i gave some away to a naibour and he has no controle over the birds as they stop out all day flying back and forth to my house. And this guy is what you call a BLAGGER. He deffo talkd the talk with me about birds but when its come down to the walk he as hasnt playd his part. So like I say I had to learn the hard way so dont be a fool to yourself and make the same mistake. YOUR HARRISON HULL UK.
