HI GUYS,
I was just wondering for futre refrence just how long would you leave a bird lockd down for after it has had a bang/bump to the head/eye?
Why I ask this question is because yesterday when my birds come in to land a little oddside hen did a STUPID roll not verry high from the roof and gave herself a right good smack on the eye.
Her eye whent like a football straight away and she was verry unstable on the legs.
Once she had come in and I gave her the once over She seemd ok and also had her feed and drink.
So I just placed her back in the kit.
On flying the kit today I noticed that she was still peforming and flying ok but never with the kit and when they landed she was wobbleing all over the loft roof.
I assumed today that she was fine as the swelling on her eye had gone down great.
So this is the reason I ask the question.
Now I no that yes the bird may look ok and the bump wasnt from a great hight but still these birds need resting.
(but for what ammount of time)
People may think well its just commen sence to rest the bird but she seemd great and flying fit.
And she did fly but NEVER with the kit.
Always infront or behind. and now I am resting her howe long for?
I dont want to be taking her out of the kit spoiling her routine.
Thank you and any comments please.

Hey Mr. Cool, The eye might look alright but if it was my bird, I would give it at least a week. Have you ever given yourself a good rap on the head by standing up to fast? I bang mine against everything not moving, and that explains a lot doesn't it! :) Just because I might look normal does not make it so!

I myself give a bird a week after a big bump like that.one to help it get over it and 2 for healing properly..rest the bird it will get back to the rhythm when time come around.peace ...

I think its good if you can keep flying them when they bump. I would probably only rest a bird if it was going light. If she is not getting enough food, it can cause bumping and rolling down which is not the cull roll down.

One or two days rest is all I would do. The fact that she flew and handled it OK is a good sign. the fact that she is an out bird right now means resting her might make it worse. At least in my experience and I have plenty with out birds. LOL

Some will shape up and never bump again but some are just unstable because it is in their back ground from breeding early developing birds or bumpers in the past generations.

I've had a few that came down drunk as you describe and some pull out of it and others seem to be plagued by it. I like the idea to keep flying them and if they dont work out, it is just as well since you have others that are fine birds to fly out. bill c

A hard rap on the head will cause brain damage, thats what we get when we are concussed. The eye may have gone down but there could still be brain swelling.
My daughter took a bang on the head a couple of months ago and she felt the effects for around 2 weeks. She couldn't concentrate so she cancelled an exam a week after the knock, and she felt generally 'wobbly'. I have reflown such birds the next day and regretted it. They will often not kit or land early or away from the loft.
I once had a bird take a knock in the kit, I saw the collision and the bird, a hen dropped out of the kit and flew around in circles. She just drifted into the distance flying in circles and was obviously disorientated. She came back several hours later, and recovered after a few days.
I generally give them 5 or 6 days recovery time. If the bird is scared of joining the kit, or is unable to keep up and you fly her as a non- kitter, she may develop the habit.
Pete.

HI GUYS.
Well today I couldnt hold my self back and decided to fly her again.
Same thing/not kitting and also noticed she didnt even put in one roll whatsoever.
And once again verry drunk on her legs when she come in the kit.
Thats it now she can have 7 days rest bless her.
She is a verry small slim bird like her mam so I believe she took that bang realy bad.
Thank you for your feed back and in futre I will give them 7 days standard procedure.
Keep um rolling guys.
