Ok, I have the paper nest bowls now. I'm feeding 22% pigeon pellets, along with grit. I'm giving the parents 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar in a gallon of water every 3 days. The baby is getting huge. I added another nest bowl to the breeding loft for the next set of eggs. What else should I do?
Should the pigeons be given any vitamins in their water?
What else can be done to keep healthy birds?
What can be done to prevent any problems?

Dave, I know you are having fun so this hurts me as much as it will disappoint you. Now is not the time to start breeding. It will be cold soon and there is just not time to settle and get your birds with the proper amount of air time. With the cold comes an increase in B.O.P. There is some limited success with holding over young birds but the majority will not turn out properly. All of that being said here is what you need to do before you start breeding.
1. Worm your breeders, then after worming give them an antibiotic such as amoxicillin to help heal the injuries left by the worms which will allow the bad bacteria to enter the birds blood stream, and lastly give them Bio Pro or any pro biotic which will help restore the good gut fauna.
2. Treat your birds with 4in1 powder as a preventive.
3. If you are feeding pellets then you don't need the grit.
4. shukz is right on the garlic but I don't mix it with the A.C.V. and make sure you use plastic water founts the A.C.V. will eat metal ones.
5. Provide plenty of nesting material.
6. I'll get in trouble for this suggestion but... I cover my paper nest bowls with Press-In-Seal which will protect the bowl. It's not the cost of the bowl but the ease of cleaning. I get a new bowl ready and when I band the squabs at one week, I replace the old nest bowl with a clean one. Then I do this every three of four days.
Good Luck Thom

Dave.... if you are feeding pellets, you don,t need any grit or oyster shell, that is to much for them and they will have loose droppings. Pellets already have all they need in them.JDA
