Hi all, first time poster, long time roller fan. I plan on building a loft in my back yard, I live inside city limits, not down town, in the suburbs, has anyone ever had an issue with that? are pigeons considered poultry? I had rollers when I was a kid and now after retiring from the Coast Guard after 20 years of service this is something I have longed to do.

John, First off welcome and Thank You, for your service! Where are you located? These days I would say the biggest enemy to pigeon fanciers is H.O.A.'s(home owners associations). Pigeons are not considered poultry although alot of H.O.A.'s will consider them poultry. I live in a community with a H.O.A. and the way they would get around everything is they have a bylaw that states you can not own more than three pets of any kind. Having said all that, if you want birds I'd say go for it. Just remember to build a well constructed loft, have a good rodent program in place and be mindful of your neighbors. Alot of folks say talk to your neighbors first. I've always figured what they don't know won't hurt them so why give them a reason to complain. Good Luck, Tracey

John, I missed the fact you live in the city limits. Like Rudy said check with the city. Fortunately, I've always lived outside the city limits which makes things a little easier. Tracey

Best Answer - Chosen by Voters It would depend on how one defines "poultry".
Strictly speaking, pigeons are not considered poultry. Here's why.
Poultry refers to domesticated fowl birds, and fowl birds are birds such as chickens, geese, ducks, pheasant, turkeys, etc. The reason those birds are bunched together as "fowl" is that they are all from the same avian order known Galliformes.
Pigeons (and doves), on the other hand, come from a different order of birds, known as Columbidae. Pigeons are part of a larger group of birds known as Passerines, or perching birds. Galliformes (chickens, turkeys, geese, ducks, etc.) are not part of the Passerine group.
So, from a scientific viewpoint, pigeons are not considered poultry.

Thanks all, I'm just going to go for it. I've looked at plenty of photo post lately and a lot of the lofts look like their in backyards, again thanks for the advice.
P.S. The POULTRY definition sounds like a winner if the city comes down on me. My home dead says no poultry.

Sound Rollers, I'd take Rudy's advice and make an anonymous call to the city, I wouldn't give my name or address. If all you got to do is submit loft plans to get a permit, that's easier than paying a fine and having to get a permit anyway. What city are you in? Maybe someone on here knows what your city requires. Tracey

Troubles come when neighbors start complaining. Keep your operation clean and simple and you won't have problems. The best thing to do is ask your neighbors and tell them about your plans and see if they have trouble with you having birds. Their reaction would tell you allot, for example, who might start some issues down the road. Tell them that this hobby will allow you to stay in your backyard and away from trouble and frequenting bars among other things. They buy that in heart beat. When you build your loft, build it way from your neighbers if possible and make sure that moult feathers are not blown all over the place. Keep it clean to keep flys and rodents away.
