Well Sunday morning the 24th,I went outside and opened all the doors so the birds could get into their flight cages and get the morning sun. I came back into the house and was making my coffee. All of a sudden I "heard" aloud thump and my birds were flying franticlly in their flight cages. I ran outside and what did I "see"!!!! Mr.Cooper was clinging to the side of one of the flight cages, cherping like "hell". All my birds dissapared inside the loft. I started yelling, screeming and clapping my hands. I think Mr.Cooper was as startled,as I was... He took off and made several circles above my loft, then headed back towards the wood. I waited for afew hours. Later on I was able to give all my kits fly time "SAFELY".... Guess it's about that time again...lol Fly High and Roll On

Ralph....I "never" leave them out to "fly" without me their watching them. This is when I jot down notes about how they are flying that day. It's my daily ritual,to go out in the morning and open the doors to their flight cages, then come back and make my coffe. Then I fly them...

Hey Paul, over the last three weeks I have had brushes with two falcons, three coopers, one sharpie and a young redtail that thinks he is a falcon! No losses, still dodging the bullet. ---------- Ron Borderline lofts

Paul, I have a nest of redtails every year. And every August the young ones practice diving on my kits. They never catch any but the birds get a warm up for what's coming!---------- Ron Borderline lofts

Why do people say not to leave your kits alone? Why do they say to never stop watching them when they are outside of the box? Is there something a person thinks they can do by being there to witness an attack? If you are in the house or standing under them, you can't do jack shit about it. You might be able to yell or create a distraction of some kind for a in-yard accipiter encounter, but not most of them away from the yard. And you can't do nothing to scare away an aerial attacker like a falcon. All you can do is watch. Of course then come onto the internet and complain about it...lol. At which point someone says, "a lot of good being there to watch it happen helped".

My favorite thing (not really) is when the local cooper will fly right past a huge flock of wild pigeons to go after one of my 11 birds i am currently flying.

You are lucky. A hawk got my white(grizzled ash red) roller last week. I was trying to resettle it and released it for the first time. It took off and this hawk just grab it mid-air and took it somewhere else. I was there present, but once these BOP gets them and drag them somewhere else I really can't do anything about it. I must admit though that I have saved many of my birds from getting killed when I was able to distract the hawks by running towards them yelling.
