i keep a 5 gal plastic bucket for disinfecting the plastic drinking fountains filled with water and 1/4 cup bleach. i submerge the fountains before use. i've been dumping the bleach water after I use it one time, but am wondering, can it be used more often as long as its covered? i smell the bleach, and figure its still potent as a disinfectant, but until i hear otherwise, i will use caution and just mix fresh each day. or should i only disinfect weekly, or after using meds?

Steve, Steve, Steve, I thought I was a tight wad! 1/4 cup of bleach in five gallons of water, and you want to save it, because? :)
Daily won't hurt but weekly unless you suspect some illness is good enough for me.
Just kidding about being a tightwad! I recycle my neighbors newspapers, (cage liners)I'm to cheap to buy them myself! :)

Thom, yeah, i know i sounded cheap, but it wasn't the cost, it was the pita to do it. i should have known better than post this, or at least edit that i wasn't concerned about the cost factor, just the inconvience that it involved. plus, the wife was pissed when i was dumping the water and it was killing the grass!!! so...hopefully no else will read this before i delete it.

Steve, My friend, please take no offense! That was not my intent, I was just pulling your leg. Sometimes my sense of humor is a little convoluted. Never in one hundred years would I say you are cheap and actually think it possible! I was only trying to answer your question with a little more pzazz then the standard. In my feeble attempt to be humorous I have offended you and for this I sincerely apologise!

Please don't censer your posts, many points are brought up that need addressing.

Friends?

Thom, friends?? of course we're friends, and no offense was taken. i should have stated that it wasn't cost that had me ask the question. it was a matter of convenience to reuse the stuff, when i really felt it wasn't, but it was a bit of a pain in the butt to do it. i'll leave the post up, as i'm sure i'm not the only one who gave it some thought, and there are plenty of newbies who will be helped by it. i'm more guilty of being lazy, and i should have known better anyway, as the fountains typically have some poop on them, and for that reason alone the water should be discarded. so, i've answered my own question, with a little help from my friends. AND, don't stop being one, and also your candor is what brings me back here so often.

Steve, Sometimes when I feel a kinship I tend to be a touch familial with no disrespect intended. Calling my orneriness candor is a kindness, but please never think of it as disrespectful. I do not make friends easily and when I do, I value them, so you are just stuck! :)

This is what I do guys when I see the water bottles getting green or stain or what have you I just fill it with clean water throw in a pinch of clorax and leave it there for two day by the sink.now I change the water everyday for the birds and I bought 3 bottles from Tony you know those quart ones and I had one already while one is being disinfected I switch with the one that was being clean.so I always have an extra one ready.all you need is a cap of clorax or bleach.just throw it down the sink if you have one out side like I have one.
