For my birds, its the morning sun. I would suggest your friend consider placing windows or flight pens to the south for more warmth during winter. JMO

I have always tried to position my lofts so that the sun pens face the north. The reason I do this is that were I live the rain tends to be much heavier from the south. The north is a bit colder winds but I have never had an issue with the colder winds. I really dont want the rains blowing into the loft. wet loft=sick birds, dry loft=health birds. Joe

JMUrbon, I don't think anyone intends to mean to have anyone expose a loft to wind and rain. We are referring to sunning pens. JMO

I realize that Tony. Just stating my reasons for the directions I position my lofts. As far as sunlight I prefer the morning sun. Very hot afternoon sun here in Northern CA. Joe

Due east or north east is the best for breeders and kit pens in Northern Calif. The morning sun through the wire warms the birds up after a night of low temps in the 30s. Here in Redding the afternoon sun all summer is in the 100 to 110, so it can be a bake oven in the loft facing the west or south west.North west you get lots of wind.JDA
