Tou, I use grow light fluorescents, they are the same light spectrum as sun light. They bulbs cost more but they are cheaper to burn.

Hey Tou.....What's that ol sayen??? One mans "junk" is another mans "treasures". I do alot of scavenging around. I find alot of windows, when people get "new" replacements. Iam always looking for things that people throw away that I can use in some way. Once I even found a set of sliding patio doors,I installed for windows in 2 of my breeding sections. You can even install them in the roof for sky lights. I do on the other hand use artificial light when needed for my breeders.

Florissant lights on a timer.
Lowe’s or any hardware store should have what you’re looking for around $10.00. I purchased the kind with a 3 prong plug and hooked up an extension cord.
Latter on I will add wire and hook them up a light switch.
Depending on the size of your loft one or two 4ft. lights should work during the breeding season.
At night time I check on them with a flashlight.
I turned the lights on one night and everybody came off the nest / perch and started flying around. I turned the lights off and you could hear them hitting everything in the loft, trying to find their way back to the nest. I left the lights on for the rest of the night.
A mistake I learned from and never repeated.

Natural sunlight is a necessity for your birds health... I would suggest to anyone to get as much "natural" light as possible.

The artificial lights should not have to be on for more that a couple hours a day. If you need more than that for light, you need to invest in some windows. Also if your loft is going to be that tight you are going to need the windows for ventilation. Tracey

barlbylofts, Your situation with the trees sounds a little tough. You did the right thing with having an aviary for them to get fresh air and natural sun light. If it works for you, you are doing the right thing! Tracey
