What would be a good size flight pen for a newbie small flock. Two sets of breeders and soon to be small kit. I have plenty of roofing material (steel) and lots of room.

How big is too big?

Is bigger better?

I approach a so called flight pen from a different angle.

Facing the south for more sun light in the winter.

Large enough for at least half of them to take a bath at one time.

They can be as large as you want them to be. $$$$

If I wanted them to have such a large fly pen,, I would fly them.

I have them attached to the breeding loft, if they don’t have nest bowl duty
they can go take a bath and sit in the sun.

3x3 or 4x4 is plenty big enough, as long as your bath pan will fit inside,
this will keep a lot of water on the outside instead of the on the loft floor.

A couple of 1x1 boards attached side to side will hold a lot of birds.

It has pro’s & con’s.

Pro = The birds have access to fresh air, sunlight, rain or a fresh bath.

If I see no birds sitting in the fly pen / sun or bath pen, I know I have a visitor
close by. Don’t fly kit birds.

You can send the birds out to the pen when you clean the loft.

Con = They provided a picture window to the BOP, letting them know you have
birds. If the wire is too large, during certain times of the year he will
do some window shopping, when he hits the fly pen they all panic
and he will catch one through they wire.

Droppings from wild birds could contaminate your birds.

The birds really need the fresh air & sunlight; I can’t see not having one.

My fly pens attached to my breeder loft are 8x8 6ft high and 8x4 6ft high and I open the windows for the birds to go out the larger one is for the fosters and the other is for the breeders but remember to cover them not to advertise to the BOP Dennis

It's all a matter of preference. I have 3 flight pens all attached to my breeding pens and different sizes. 1 is 8x8x7,2 are 5x4x4 and my 4 kitboxes have a small settling cage on them...3x3x3.. So it all comes down to preference....
