Hey All,
I am as guilty as anyone. My first reaction when someone posts pictures of a new kit box or loft is “Good Job!” Hard work can be acknowledged but obvious mistakes can be harmful. Pointing out that one cat can cause harm is not hurting feelings but saves a newbie’s birds. It’s everyone’s job to monitor and advise or stop claiming to be family. Useful advice is not criticism it is nurturing and we are after all, family.

Johnnie, You made my point. It is up to those that know and can see potential dangers to just not say "Good Job!" I had absolutely no intention of singling you out. I only said cat and trap, it could have been mouse and wire or paint or not.....or? My point with the post was not to harm but to draw attention that if mistakes are not mentioned it is the novice that will pay the price. If anyone had spoken up and advised you about the possibility of a cat getting through your traps, you would have changed them. Everyone is so caught up in encouraging each other few will point out the obvious, if you know, not so obvious if you don't. I have nothing but respect for the way you handled it with your daughter. It was not her fault and she was doing the best she knew to help, it also was not your fault, just bad luck! If one bird can be saved or if one mistake is corrected before the harm, was and, is my point.

Thom, i'm sorry, i was only saying that tongue in cheek. i'm in complete aggreement about the usual, 'your loft looks great' response, when it has obvious faults. i am not sure exactly what happened to encourage your original remarks, but it seemed like someone had given you a hard time for your honesty, and it was that honesty that i was referring to. ---------- Steve in Blue Point, NY

Hey All, I want the list to know that Steve's comment and my reaction to it was a total misunderstanding. Steve and I have talked through email and I now understand what he said was with concern that I was being given a hard time by someone on the list. Which was not the case, but he thought it possible. I think of Steve as a gentleman and a friend. I look forward to our future correspondence, both on this site and through email.
Johnnie, I use the P.V.C. drop trap and they are safer in my mind but I still have a fold up landing board that secures the trap. It's through misfortune that we learn and sharing our experiences may prevent the same thing from happening to others.
Thanks, Thom

Donny, I agree but unfortunately our hobby is spread far and wide. Some just do not have any other people near by and are dependent on this site for all of their input. So asking questions and making mistakes are their norm. The one true thing I know is if that you saw something wrong, you would try to help. That is all any of us can do. :)
Take care my friend. Thom

Hey Thom, I for one really appreciate honesty in posts on this site. If there was an obvious problem with my small loft design I would surely welcome any and all criticism. There is no such thing as a perfect loft. I just use all the ideas that I like and incorporate them into my design. I picked up a black and white hen and another black cock from Fred Jenkins today. ---------- Dave - Hesperia, CA.

Hey Dave, It is hard to be helpful with out being hurtful. I have a very thin skin, I appreciate constructive "APRECIATION" but adhere criticism. There is so much to learn or in my case unlearn. My preconceived notions of how come and why for hold me back. I wish to be informed without being lectured. So.... I'm off the soap box. :) Thanks Thom

Dave, Truth, I like pigeons so anything I say will be prejudice, also truth, they are rollers and it's all about, the spin. If I want something pretty, I would ask my bride to sit in the loft. :) On another note, is that plastic wrap? Press-N-Seal will work better. Rub it into the bowl first, it's tough so it won't tear. :) Thom

I got the idea from you. I just had it in the cage that way to keep the desert dust out of it. But I will look for press-N-Seal at the store. Have you ever used epsom salt in your water? Fred Jenkins says he puts 1 table spoon of bleach in all the water he gives his birds. I never heard of that one. ---------- Dave - Hesperia, CA.

Dave, I always use Epsom salts in their bath, it helps brighten white feathers and more importantly rid them of pests. I have heard of using bleach but do not give it to my birds. I prefer to use it to sterilize the water founts and any feed trays. The cost of press-n-seal far outweighs the cost of a nest bowl. I use it to prevent the bowl from becoming wet. After I band, I change the nest bowl out ever other day. Some will disagree but I don't like my birds living in their own poo, so I scrap and clean every day. The birds are so used to me cleaning they hardly pay any attention. I can lift a hen off of her eggs and she just gives me a dirty look and then settles back rubbing against my hand. :)
