It's almost snow fall here in Alaska, I was just wondering if the birds in the lofts can rough it through winter temps that average from 5 to 25 degrees above zero, last couple years I had one in there and it was a pain and sometimes unsafe when the feathers got it the coils. My electric bill was up as well.. Whats your take on it?

That rough weather. I think they can handle it though. Make sure they get plenty of popcorn and other fatty foods. ALso check the loft for drafts. If you can seal it tight most of the time they should be able to stay warm.
Another thought is to have straw in the nest boxes that they can use to stay warm in. Not sure if they will will use it like rabbits, or dogs or not.
A small oil filled, radiant heater may work better than a coil based heater also.
enjoy the snow

Yea they can handle it if fed properly and no drafts, maybe put in a 100 watt bulb to just knock it a hair.

Ak-roller, I had to read your post a second time to make sure you said above zero. Your birds will handle that with no problem. Just feed them more, with some corn ( popcorn ) works best. You do not need to heat the loft either, so you can save some money. I live in northern Wisconsin and we get winters where it does not get ABOVE zero for a month at a time. I have not heated my lofts and have never had a problem. I fly my kit birds as long as it stays above zero and I can stay outside to watch them...lol. The feed is the main thing and drafts.

AK....I live in Ohio, it's by no means "Alaska"...lol, but we do get a good deal of snow and very "cold" below 0 temps. Here's my loft, out in the middle of my yd. with no protection from the elements. I don't heat it but, I use water heaters only. I do add plenty of popcorn. As you can see I have flight cages for all my birds to get out in the "sun" when it appears..
lol. Good luck
