George, When I was in middle school and high school in Ohio, I didn't even know that there were different families of rollers. My birds came from a German guy named Krupke. I know now that he flew mainly Whittinghams. They flew high and rolled very deep and slow, and not real frequent. Then I got a couple pair from another friend of my father's by the name of Bill Mayle that gave me two pair of Pensoms. Not knowing any better, we bred them all together and traded birds with other friends around town. But I always begged my dad to take me to the guys in the Akron-Canton Roller Club, Matt King, Howard Beal, Joe Quinn, Wally Forte, Roger Baker to their club meetings and to see their birds fly. They rolled more frequently and faster. Of course I knew nothing about feeding or kit training. We just opened the door to the loft and flew the breeders and flyers that were all housed together.
When I decided to get back into rollers in 2002 or 2003, after visiting my brother, Chuck, who had a few rollers in Ohio, he hooked me up with a guy he knew that had some available, but he was a backyard flyer who didn't know what family they were. I kept them a little while, but didn't raise much in the way of performance...mostly just tumblers. So I decided to get more serious and spent some big bucks for Pensom/Plona birds. I searched on line and bought four pair without seeing them. That was a dumb move. I raised about a hundred Pensom/Plona birds using the other Canton birds for pumpers. I kept them for about 18 months and nothing rolled more than 10 feet so I culled them all (but one 20-foot hen). Meanwhile I noticed that Jay Yandle had one the 11-bird Nationa Championship and he lived 30 miles from me so I went to visit him....almost every weekend. I had never seen rollers that performed with that kind of speed, depth, and frequency as his Turner family. Once he saw I was serious, he began picking birds out of the air and out of his stock loft and giving them to me. The rest is history. Thanks for asking. Cliff

Cliff when I was a kid I used to open the loft door and let the birds out , I had all kinds fantails . kings, west of Englands, .
I used to get the Birds at a Pet shop for Five dollers a piece.
I still remember a red badge that had a NBRC band he was my first real roller , I couldnt wait to get home and let him out, he would fly and roll all the time ,even thou I kept the food in the loft.
Thanks for shareing .

George, I kept a few pouters and fantails too back then, that I traded for, or bought with money I earned in the summer loading bales of hay on wagons at 50 cents an hour from local farmers.. Ol' Man Krupke had every breed of pigeon that I had ever seen and I loved to go visit his place when I could get Dad to take me. He wanted two bucks apiece for his rollers. My dad said, "Two dollars for a pigeon? You can go downtown and catch all you want for free!" But he eventually sprung for a few bucks for a couple pair, when I told him that these pigeons were different. It's fun to look back on those days, isn't it, George? Cliff

Yes Cliff it was lots of fun , I remember some short face tumblers that would fly and do single flips. I thought I had some Champion tumblers LOL.
