I would NOT get mad or upset !!! it dont matter what time I fly I should be able to adjust my kit so I could still have a chance at winning if I have a decent kit .

it would also mean more to me if I was able to beat the Competition reagardless of the time slot they give me to fly.

if I have to have a certain fly time in order to WIN then that aint saying much about the ability of my Birds or my training.

I agree Walter. I can fly anytime of the day although I would rather fly late in the afternoon but I have to have atleast 4 day's to peak my birds, a month's warning is great though.

I sure we all would like to select the perfect time slot on fly day, but unfortuanately logistics don't allow a week or so to fly so that each person can fly the exact time of day they would like. It is frustrating and tough when the time you are given gets changed last minute or too close to make and adjustment and you end up flying then next day or so, or in the evening instead of the morning. A good coach prepares their team for all conditions. In Vegas in the Spring and Fall the later in the day the higher chance of wind and also updrafts. What we are doing now with our first club fly series is each fly we start at a different house and go around the valley in order after that. So one fly you will get close to your preferred time, another you get a decent time, and then the other 2 you get what you get. This is the only way to be fair to all our club members. You can't continually penalize the new flyers with the least preferred times because the veterans feel they have senorioty. In the World Cup and Fall Fly we have always let the person who won the last big fly pick when they want to fly,and then rotate from there. I would love to fly at 1 hour after sunrise every time I compete. That is the most consistent time I get to fly my birds. But these competitions aren't just about me, they are about a group of flyers and it is virtually impossible to give everyone the perfect fly time. Enjoy your next fly! Don M. LVRC

Heat is the only thing that matters.....You should be able to fly anytime...once you have your fly time...start flying your birds at that time....as long as there is no heat...afternoon is just as good...

My B-Team....beat my A-team last year and my A-team had the primo fly time...8am...the B-team was 2 pm....

Thanks Ralph. I guess trying to squeeze in computer time after working out in the heat in the afternoon isn't the best time- anyway that's my excuse!

Although I do not currently fly in competitions, you guys are pointing out the main reason I choose to not do it. There's enough subjectivity in the judging alone. Add in the factors of fly time, weather (whether or not), day of the week, advance notice, etc. I really have a hard time wrapping my brain around engaging myself and my birds into an organized, or unorganized, competition where a number of faults exist.

I do NOT blame any organization for the fault. I DO understand the nature of the sport. I also understand that there will always be someone that isn't happy regardless of what he or she gets on comp day.

That being said, I think the overall nature of the Fall Fly and World Cup is to simply get roller folks to engage in comraderie and fellowship. At least that's what I take away from it when I visit others' lofts.

My take,

Colors, it is more than to have people in the backyard. You can do that anytime. The only way to know what I mean is when yoy start participating. It is basically the drive to get the birds to the best form you can.

Jay,

I completely understand what you're saying. I purposefully don't shy away from competition because of my sentiments towards it. Rather I choose to not compete due to the inconsistencies in the current system. Again, I don't put blame on any organization or flyer. Folks are doing all they can to get together and fly. I admire that day in and day out!

So nothing negative meant by my post. I respect you folks that do compete. Heck I struggle with turning out a team of homers on a regular schedule. I know it takes more focus and discipline with rollers and other performing breeds.

You folks have my respect for what you do!

Excuses excuses. I drew a 2:00 fly time in our regionals this year on a day I had a work conflict. year. I had no comp fly experience and no holovers just youngbirds, but you gotta start somewhere. I still put my birds up with help from my dad who knows very little about rollers and I wasn't even there to meet the RD or the judge which I was sorry for. This was my first comp fly and I couldn't be there but I still flew. I tell you the truth flying in a comp will make you a better roller flyer regardless of what stage of this hobby you are in. I'm glad I did it and will do it again regardless of fly time. I loved it and wasn't even here to see my birds fly. I got a score and that was my goal. You gotta walk before you run, so be it. Don't be concerned about trying and failing even the best of the best don't win everytime. It does motivate you to figure out how to get the most out of your birds regardless of conditions.

I live 100 miles from the closest comp fliers. I am happy they are willing to come out here. The WC was at 2:30, and the hottest day up to that point. It was the first time my birds had landed early in over a couple months. It was also spring and a cock wanted coo more than fly. he is longer around.
Any way it was a great oppurtunity to fly and I learned a lot. If I can get a judge or anyone out here I will let them up. Just let me know when so i can feed correcly to get them to trap.

George, Change thier feed and fly them two days in a row and then rest them for two days and they probably won't win the event, but they won't embarrass you either..

George, in our region we don't get to pick our fly times anyways and to answer your question I really do not care what time I fly, just let me fly....LOL...

I now understand that you will always have all kinds just like in your kits, for example... Some just don't want to kit and some roll down...LOL

I will be flying, dont ask me what time, all i know is its the 26,My birds will do what they can under any situation,im not Flying a great team this year,Ive lost over 100 birds to the Falcon.so i never had a chance,or my birds never had i chance, but to support the Hobby and the NBRC i will fly.
Do i care if i get a big 0 for points,NO,i know what i have and the potential my birds have ,i know they whould do great in another loft,in another city, and in another state or even in another country.
Where i live, i know i will never have a chance to fly birds older than 6 months, the Falcons Redtails and Coopers have become part of this Hobby.
I just breed 300 to end up with 40 by the end of the year.
But that whouldnt stop me from flying.
But you know we all see it diferent,i respect everyonce judgement wheather they want to fly or not.We all enjoy our pigeons how ever we want, and thats the way it should be..

Hi Hector,

I know this may sound strange, but may I suggest that you are actually adding to the Falcon problem by flying your rollers?

I mean that if you are breeding 300 and losing 260, that is enough feed to keep a nest of Falcons going strong.

Perhaps it is time to consider another breed?

OK - now shoot me.

Sincerely,

Ken Firl

You say i add to the problem,i may.but here in So,Cal,we have 3 flyers per squer mile,I could hold my bird in for 5 years and the person down the street will keep feeding them.
And as to change breeds,Im 48 years old,Ive had rollers since i was 9,i couldnt imagine changing breeds,If you realy a rollerman ,you just dont change breeds from one day to another,it just dont happen.
I will breed and fly rollers till the day the Lord comes calling,or the other guy,,,LOL

Georgie some people may think because one don't care about the time they fly doesn't have a team maybe its the other way about, the others that do care what time they fly and gripe i want this and i want that or im not flying have seen it plenty of times and still flop.My opinion of someone that doesn't care is really in fact helping the director out by letting him deal with the ones that demand their time

Paul, I am LOL... The moult has hit them very hard this year...LOL.. Hopefully I will have them spinning again by the regional fly. Glad you caught that.. I am amazed that no one else is going thru the same thing right now with their birds. I will give it my best shot and hopefully it will be good enough to push me into the finals. It is all pushing for a better fly bro, every time and no excuses. Good luck to all and me too (cause I need some)...lol

Nick, I know that all of the guys that FLY in this region are not cry babies and that makes the biggest difference, they always seem to want to push and put up a good kit no matter what. I wish all of you luck gentlemen. Nick, I will leave out of the luck part you don't need none... lol

Sal, The moult is a big factor around this time. Im working for next year towards having at least 4-kits to choose from. This way you can build a team or work on a team to promote them thru the moult quicker. Take note when flying your birds, keep an eye on the ones that just dont care about the moult and built a team or at least for next year, you will know which ones to put together for the fall fly.

George , I try to keep my birds close to the edge. I sit them down for about a month out of the year and if I see them getting a little stiff I will rest them a week. I like to fly my birds for anyone who comes by and I want them to put on a show ,and I'm just a pure out roller junkie.
