The main reason that I band my birds is that I want to keep records on the family of particular birds. I know most of the birds by their markings but I also have a lot of selfs and the bands make it easy to know who is who, especially when you get into the 3rd and 4th generations. You breed 50-60+ birds a year and it can get mind boggling. You dont have to but if you get serious you will band them. If you are going to show them they have to be banded. It could also be proof of ownership if stolen and recovered. ---------- They gotta Spin to win.....Jay

spin city is correct. i used to band my birds with clip on bands but i had quite a few black selfs especially with my family and they were hard to tell. i think personalized bands are the way to go. sometimes if they get lost and end up in some thefts backyard then they'll just cut the bandso they can sell it or watever, but the bird there is a chance of it getting somewhere else too where they will call you up if they find your bird.

Hey Sue, There are several good reasons to band your birds, some of which have already been touched open but I will list them again.
1. As an aid in record keeping. 2. Proof of ownership, if you purchase a bird or if someone gives you a bird. 3. No reputable fancier will accept a bird that has not been banded as it could be stolen. Again, proof of ownership but different. 4. The band information includes the year of birth, the state it was born in, and a number that is individual to that bird and in some cases the club the owner is a member of. 5. Some chose to have their phone number on the band as a means of recovery if lost. I hope that helps. :)

To me my birds are not complete without a band on there feet..ppl don't charge more because the bird is banded is what that bird is made of that it cost more.put it this way vhawk you have a social security # right date of birth well that's the bird SS#..his ID# is very important as for record keeping like Thom says..Lets say you have a birds doing everything right in the air you want to see who it is out of you check his band number go to yur records and match it to your record of that birds that produce that bird and bingo no guessing you know who its parents are..... ---------- Ralph. In the uk each club has its oun ring. My club the all england roller club has on the rings
AERC the year of issue 09 been the latest then if I order 50 rings my number on the rings could be anything from 0000 to 0050 or 2020 to 2070 (EXAMPLE) These numbers are registerd in my name so any lost can be traced back to me. In the AERC club you can only fly birds with aerc rings on that are registerd to you or that have been transferd over to you from anougthe breeder. Also you can only fly rollers in the UK if they have a registerd club ring on them. So in the UK if the bird hasnt got a registerd club ring on them you can not enter them int any club flys. This also stps stolen birds having there rings cut off and been flown, As the ring will not fit on a bird older then so many days as they are aliuminiam making it impossibl to put them onto stolen birds. hope you guys can understand my wording? LOL; So let me get this right. If i have a pair of birds that have all the goods but are not banded there worth less. I should think not.And if there is no pedigree on the pair they are worth less. Again i think not. If you dont agree with the price then move on. But why drag his name in the mud. Wrong Wrong and more Wrong. Do you honestly think if you go buy a pair from the WC WINNER and get the birds that did the winning thats going to get you a big win. LOL Oh my my my you have lots to learn. Bottom line is, Its not right to drag his name in mud. DONT LIKE IT DONT BUY IT THAT SIMPLE. And NO i do not know this man. This is of course (J M O )

If you are looking for good birds, try Tony's and they are banded. You can buy 10 for the price of one from that person (lol). Thanks for removing that guy's name from your post. You saved me and edit.

The price of the bird does not mean its a good bird. I recall Scott's story about the 3000 dollar fosters and I can tell you about 2 100 dollar fosters that I have also. I would get birds from someone like Tony [or a local flyer] who want rip you off and who you can pick up the phone and ask questions about the birds and how is best to feed, fly, breed, etc. I learned the hard way about using peoples names you fill have wronged you or are just plain wrong. Just keep it to your self, make a mental note not to deal with them and move on. ---------- Ty Vapor Trail Lofts

Vhawk,
I have bought birds from several fliers they all had bands. I haven't always banded everything I produced (some years I wasn't comitted and just plain lazy). But here's my take on things. When someone sells you a bird with a band on it there is no way to deny where it came from. It came from them. Kind of like an artist putting their name on the painting. No one can gaurantee their stock will produce excellent, however, when someone sells you a banded bird they know it comes with some risk to their reputation. If no band no risk. Try to find a club in your area get to know some people and see some birds fly and see if someone will help you get started. As in life like roller pigeons there are good, bad, humble, arrogant, etc. people. Find someone that talks your language and go from there don't be bullied into buying something because someone won something. Some people never win but consistently place. I would look for birds from someone that consistently place in the running. Especailly if they are willing to coach you a bit on how to mange the birds once you get them.

I want a band on my birds with my phone number and the NBRC band on the other leg. I found a bird and in the process of finding the owner became facinated by these birds. Now I have 5 birds and having a blast If your neighbor finds an injured or lost bird or if someone strays them in. They now know who to call.

So can you guys in the USA fly birds in comp that dont have a registerd club band on them? Wow i bet there is a few lost birds getting flown in peoples kits during comp time and there getting all the credit for somone elses hard work. If thats the case somone could buy a full team of stolen birds and break them off and enter them into comp? please tell me that i have misunderstood and you do have to put club rings on bcause if not its such ashame to the sport and so unfair . just my view harrison hull uk

vhalk you didn't answer the questions (jammeriofts)were are you from and(nickless)do you band your birds i read your profile and you have 4 pair, get some fosters and 4 pair will produce you24 birds per month and if you don't band them you will wish you did for record reasons what if you get a few real good spinners out of 24 birds a month you think for a minute you will remember there parents i don't think so. I breed from 4 pair and have plenty of fosters each band# gets a page in my RECORD book. Dennis

Dennis its true what you said and I myself in my first year of breading fell victim to it. (it shouldnt be to hard remebering what young come from what pairents) How wrong I was, You have 4 blue pides in your team and one is performing fantastick picking it out in the kit box is hard as it is. Trying to remember what the pairents were is almost impossible. Thats why rings are a must. Also what I have done is with my 3 blue pides is. 1st bird sprayd the first tail feather pink, 2nd has its second tail feather pink and so on then next to there ring number in my records I have put what number tail feather they have sprayd . So I no exactly what bird is whhat. you can buy the stuff in tins . Its for peoples hair when they want to highlight it with funny colors. you can get temporey or permonent. You only need to do one feather. I have seen people spray the full wing pink and one green. So oif you do use this idea try not to get carried away with it. Harrison H.K.R ROLLER LOFT HULL UK

I like that idea Joe. Dave uses a similar way of marking his young. Due to the number of young a cock can raise he puts a different color or all of his stock hens. Any young off that hen will always have that same color on one leg. A cock can be put on a number of different hens in a single season so by putting them on the hens you will always know who the mother of the young is and then go to her pairings for that year and go from there. That is were Dave got the term ( my green hen) and so on. Joe ---------- J.M.Urbon Lofts A Proven Family of Spinners http://www.freewebs.com/jmurbonlofts/
