I just want to do this right.
1. Should I frame with 2 x 4's or will 2 x 3's suffice? 2. Paint; oil base or latex?

John 2x4 For sure. Building anything that size with 2x3 would bring you problems for sure.

Sound Rollers...I would use 2x4x8's for a loft that big. 2x2's or 2x3's for kitboxs and individual breeding pens. As far as the paint... What will your pocket afford?? But which ever one you choose, make sure it has a primer in it as well.

You should have no trouble using 2 X 3's on a small loft like this. Mine has lasted many years with them and is a little bigger. I would suggest you make the back 8 feet high instead of 7 ( 2 sheets of plywood with no cutting and waste.) I would have made the floor 8 X 8 if space permitted. When building something like this, remember to try and use multiples of 4 as in 4 X 8, 8 X 12 etc. as easier to build and less waste. Your new loft will look good I am sure and I hope you post a picture when completed. Geo. D.

TheGame, I might fly fosters or culls out of one side of this loft, any birds that land on top before they trap I want to see. ---------- John

Hay John plan your windows well because you might want to build your kit box attached to the loft faceing the most open sky.Good luck with them cant wait to see it full.Dennis

I use water based exterior latex paint on my loft. They dry faster without that "paint" smell. It is easy to clean your brushes, too.
With respect to the framing, both might work unless your roof is heavy or you might have some heavy snows then I will use 2x4 instead.
