Has anyone thought of or tried to use a Hen as their foundation bird? Cocks and males in general are much easier to use in breeding because they can cover many females and produce loads of offspring of which one can evaluate. Conversely, a hen being covered by multiple males would take a lot more time to do and produce fewer offspring. Although, pigeons are pretty prolific, it may be doable. Am I safe in saying that a lot of your birds share the same sire but different dam?

Was wondering if anyone ever experimented with that say; a particular hen's offspring were superior to that of a particular cocks offspring. I would be interested in the concept if I could ever get a group of birds to stay around long enough.

As often as not or maybe even more so hens have been the foundation of many good strains for a just off the top of my head 514, 1220.
I am now working with 3 great hens and only one good cock, which this is an improvement, as the last 3 years I have worked with only one real good hen, and unknown to average cocks, my standard which is off beat to the super kit birds most are looking for.
I want fast spin and 35 to 65 deep 3 times per minute with clean exits.
Do I get this not even close, but I have shot for this self imposed standard for many years maybe some day I will hit the right combination Pacos Bill

well thats very interesting. Im glad the hens are working for you in your particular endeavors. What will progress breeding is knowing the mechanism behind the roll. Heres an abstract of an article that looked at using serotonin to supress the tumble without sedation.

Serotonergic involvement in the backward tumbling response of the parlor tumbler pigeon.
Smith GN, Hingtgen J, DeMyer W.

The parlor tumbler is a breed of domestic pigeon which displays a hereditary movement disorder resulting in backward somersaulting upon attempting to fly. A neurochemical abnormality has been suggested to underlie this behavior. The effect on tumbling of several drugs with serotonergic actions was studied. Increasing available serotonin with 5-hydroxytryptamine (50 mg/kg) plus fluoxetine (10 mg/kg) as well as using amitriptyline (10-20 mg/kg) significantly suppressed tumbling without sedation. This suggests that serotonin mechanisms may be involved in the tumbling response.
