Not trying to stir the pot, but why do we fly comp in the high point of the hawk migration ? Why do we not work to change this ? I will fly whenever the comps are held but I sure do hate loosing 2-3 year old birds to the hawks.

i'll second Ty's request. i'm already seeing hawks scare my birds, and i can just imagine how its going to be in october. of course, the world cup is in june, but that doesn't explain the current death trap known as the fall fly.

Simple solution...don't fly. Given a drastic drop in participation, I'm fairly confident that the organizations you fly with will change the practices. There are no devils, just a cycle that should be broken by its legion. Without participants, there is no competition. Think about it.

The Perri Memorial Fly / NBRC Fall Fly / NBRC National Championship Fly was put together in a time when predator strikes against rollers were slim to none. In most parts of the country Fall offers generally universal fly situations, that being cooler weather and the birds just coming out of the molt. As most people who have flown in Oct/Nov can attest to, the birds really start to shine in mid to late fall.

That was then.

Obviously the flying theatre has drastically changed since then. There has been heavy discussion about this very topic for the past few years. The problem is that there is generally only 5-6 months of the year that are relatively predator free, and even that is changing rapidly in many areas.

What it boils down to is we have two large organized flys, one in the "traditional" fall and one in the spring (WC). The WC takes up april/may and early June. By late June in most areas of the country it is blazing hot. By mid July the birds start to molt. August is a worthless month to fly and September isn't much better.

In searching for a time frame that is the most "fair" for most participants across the board, late spring seems to be the only time frame that could be considered the best of what we have available. Problem is, that is World Cup time. Basically the NBRC fly is stuck with the fall. Having it in the middle of summer will cut the participation in half. Having it during the winter is completely out of the question. Having it in the spring is equally unacceptable because of the World Cup. So in essence the NBRC is stuck with the fall until the time comes when predation is so bad that people simply stop flying in it.

It sucks but it is what it is.

Thanx, BA Rollers, you covered it perfectly. at least we have an explanation that at least explains what we're up against.

Well being the NBRC and World Cup seem to work hand in hand with the 20 bird maybee we could at least get the 11 bird moved to the spring of the year. The eleven bird is supposed to be the best of the best birds we own anyway so if we moved it to the spring we may be able to preserve our future superstar birds for the breeding pen insted of cooper food.

Ty this has been brought up so many times....The NBRC actually backed up the Finals.....by at least 2 weeks to try and beat the hawks....I have seen one cooper at my place so far.....but in Mid to late October...they are everywhere....as far as the Prelims..you can fly ANYTIME you want......during the year.....if your region wants to fly the Pre lims in March...YOU CAN!!!...

The finals are the best time for everyone...you see on the Western side of the state...from June-September...it is HOT....the moult is still happening......so this is a small window to fly the finals......Heat, Hawks, Moult pick your poison......LOL....but the weather is unpredictable during the Winter months....and the hawks are all over the place....and the world cup takes April through June......February..we still have hawks....March..you are training for the World Cup...

So there really is not a good time.....but the prelims can be anytime......any earlier and you will have the state of California having a heart attack....and most of the fliers are from California...again..HEAT....this has been a discussed for years...and really I have no other ideas....

In England the Major flys are in late summer and autumn. This is I think a tradition that developed to accomodate flying young bird kits.
When I was flying regularly, my favourit fly became the WC because my kits seemed on their best forn at that time of year
Bt the time the All England fly comes around, the weather can be too hot, the birds are going off form; and they are in the middle of the moult just in time for the National fly.
If spring suits the majority of flyers in your area then how does the WC impact on that?
Create a short competition season in the spring to avoid the worst of the hot weather and the worst of the preditior season. If you are preping them for one major fly, why not for 2.or 3?
You wont get it right for everyone.
You cannot do that in the WC because our summer is someone elses winter, but most all of the U.S is more or less in the same part of the world so push for what suits the majority of y'all.
Spring and midwinter are the best times for good flying in my area, but I very much doubt we will have a major fly in the winter because people will say the judge will get stuck in snow (very rare occurence) or the weather is too bad, but we have heat, high winds, and storms in the summer so it will always be a risk whenever you fly.
Pete.

Pat,
Wht don't you panel judge your region using the flyers? Just rotate the panel so that the flyer is not in the panel when his own birds are judged. It's not ideal but will do in a pinch like this when the judge has to back out at the last minute.

Pat, that sux. i was talking to some of our local guys, and the idea of rotating flying time with the WC was brought up. one year, WC would be in the fall, next year it would be in the spring. what do you think?
