I have actually seen this on a hen, It depends on the strain of birds. I have them Neibels and I never see hens with them black ticks though. But I raised a cock this year that doesn't have any on him which is kinda funny but whatever. :) So it just depends but for sure it doesn't mean it's a cock for sure..

The black ticking bird is a cock carrying black, cocks can carry 2 colors and that causes the ticking. All mine with ticking are cocks. If the spot are a little large then it may have some Almond or something else causing the spots and that is not ticking.

A red hen may have ticking but it is ususally a dark brown, not black. Your cock without ticking is probably pure red if it is a red or lavender,that means it is not carrying blue. If it's a grizzle I have no idea what it means,lol Pete.

Funny you mention Neibels. The only red cheq hen I had with flecking on was picked out of the air by Monty as being worthy of stock.
