Tou, I usually breed about 100 birds and I have lots of room and most important fun with them... lol.. I think you should only breed what you think you can manage. I see some breed over their capabilities and then complain about everything..lol... Good Luck!

Sal, from the 100 birds, how many you keep at the end of that batch? Just trying to validate some thoughts later on this thread. Your input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I keep 12 pair of breeders.
What I have done is built 2 new kits in a small section of my loft.
I use one kit for my 20 young team and the second kit for my cocks.
The hens live in the main breeding section were at the moment I have removed the nesting boxes.
But it does have box perches.
Next year I no that I will need one more kit bcause I will have my new young birds and my yearling team and the breeder cocks.
I dont have the breeders splitt all year round but I want to breed early jan so am giving the cocks plenty of time away from the hens.
Once I put my new nesting boxes in the breeders i will put the hens in the kit and cocks in the breeders section.
I plan on keeping my 20 young birds for as long as I think it takes for them to reach there full potenshal so all in all come this time next year I will have 24 breeders, 20 yearlings and around 30 young birds bcause no dought I will lose atleast 10.
So thats a total of 74 birds in my loft.
And I only have a small place but make the most out of it.
You can see by my pictures what size loft i have and my birds are verry content indeed.
My pictures are in the post (AT LAST)

Tou,
What do you mean by limited space?

I think that you need a min of 3 kit boxes. 1 old bird box, and 2 young bird boxes. Plan on raising around 50 young birds to fill your 2 young bird kit boxes. With less birds than that you are only 1 overfly away from being done for the year.

Hi tou,

there is no minimum number required to have and enjoy Birmingham rollers. I know guys that have 4 pairs and have fun and guys that have 100 pairs and have fun. If you could tell us what amount of space you have, we could give better input.

When I started I had 1 double kit box of about 4 x 4 x 8. On one side I had 4 pairs of breeders and on the other I flew the young. I got the birds in March of 99 and flew in the fall fly that same year.

I could have had fun flying rollers out of that set up for years but would not have been competitive in any flies.

If you want to fly in competition and do well, then it depends on your conditions, how many hawks, what kind of weather, etc. I feel most guys need 3 kit boxes, 1 for old birds and 2 for young birds and enough space for about 8 breeding pairs. I would get the best 2-4 pairs I could and foster them with another 4-6 pairs of fosters.

Best Regards,

Ken

I have loys of room, but I only want to fly 1 small kit for now. I plan on starting out next year with 4 breeding pairs and fly the babies.

Here is a picture of my humble breeding loft and Kit box combo.
