we really need local representation in my local area (long island,ny) and i'm willing to start the process of beginning a local club. i've gotten oral support from a few local flyers, but want to make sure i've got a plan in place as to what is the best thing to do first, and so on. club officers please help me with this.
thanx

Steve, if you have 2 or 3 that will be active and help out it will be OK but you may have to carry it yourself before it will get on it's feet. The ones that don't help will be the ones that complain the most, Just remeber that. You can't please everyone, but good luck and a club can be a great place to make new friends and have a great time.

thanx for the responses Ty, Eric and Donnie. there was a club, and some of the current flyers were in it, and they didn't bother reforming a new club after the original club ended, so it made me wonder. i'm not overly confident that i can pull it off, but i figure i'd get some idea what should first be done, and then contact everyone and see if they're still interested. maybe it should be centered around a bbq so everyone can chill and get to know everyone better. i'm still thinking about whether it can happen if i don't get enough support from the others.

I attended a meeting of the CCPRC 's club and they all met at a local BBQ restraunt and I had a great time talking birds with them, so that might be a good idea.

Hi guys,

I have been in and an officer of a local club for the last 11 years.
I
would say the first thing to do is to establish the "purpose" for having the club.

We have a great local club with around 70 members but only 15 or so are actice in flies and with helping run the club. Those that do the work get tired and the club falters.

Secondly - Make some minimum, level of participation mandatory.

It was my understanding that there was a strong roller presence in NY city or the eastern half of NY state already. It would be my suggestion to work with in the current organization to be included or at least try that first. If that is not an option, use their basic structure as a working plan to develop one specific for your area of coverage. Use the NBRC membership rooster to gauge size and distance within the area you want to include.

Were I come from in the UK I have seen so many clubs fall to pieceses and at the moment there isnt even a club to fly in.
The last was the KINGSTON FLYERS ROLLER CLUB.
And it lasted only a few years.
I want to be in a club so bad it kills me but like phantom said there is alot of work needed to be done and its to much for me to handle alone so at the moment I am keeping away from that idea.
It still is somyhing I would love to be part of and you never no it may come true one day.
GOOD LOOK and I hope it all works out for you

Hi Steve,

our club has one official club meeting each year in the summer and also hosts a show in Jan/Feb that is open to the public. In addition we have regional fly sections and there is inly one operating currently with 6 flies, Sep - Nov and Mar - Jun.

If I were to start a club I would base the participation requirement around the goals for the club. For example, if the club was about getting more guys to fly, I would make flying mandatory. If the club purpose was more along the lines of promoting the breed, perhaps some amount of time heloping with shows, and.or futurity flies woudl be appropriate. If you have a bulletin, perhaps one article per year contributed would be a mandatory way to help.

Those are my ideas of really making a club work.

Cliff, i don't know about upstate NY, if that was what area you were referring to, and as far as NYCity, same thing. Long Island (should be our 51st state anyway) has no local club, but does have NBRC membership. I personally know of 6 flyers, including myself, and only 3 of us flew in the fall fly. to me, if i'm working everyday to improve and train my birds, one fly in the fall, with perhaps the WC in the spring is really not enough. Plus, i see states with a larger number of flyers, who have large membership in local clubs and these people get to fly more competitions because of that. thats what i'm hoping to encourage. there was a suffolk county roller club, but it folded. i realize that unless the membership cares enough to drive the club forward, it will probably fail as its too much work for one person. i suppose that's what happens most of the time. kudos to the originators of the nbrc (yes, i'm a member) to get it to the size and importance it has achieved. the bulletin is a real selling point, but not for the small local club, which i think needs to concentrate on local gtg's and bbq's etc. thanx for taking the time to offer ideas.
Ken, i like your ideas also, and will consider them when trying to get this off the ground.
Harry, like you i also feel the pain of no local club. it would be so nice to meet up with other flyers, to discuss the birds and just kick back, maybe even with the wives tagging along. if my wife new other wives would be there to talk to, i'm sure she'd attend.
