yesterday i noticed some undigested food on the top of my kit box where one kit had just finished flying and were walking on the roof before i called them in. made the observation, but didn't notice anything unusual. i did add 5 squeeks to this box on sat. morning, and wormed the birds on sunday.(wazine 1 fl oz/gal) the feed has not been changed, and today, i saw a bird actually in the act of regurgitating undigested or partly while still in the box before being fed. i'm concerned, but not overly, as the same bird did bathe and seems normal, along with the others. it could just be the one bird, and it may have ingested something other than food, that would make it do this. however, i was hoping someone could shine a light on what else it might be. i was thinking sour crop, but am unsure of the actual symptoms. please help!!!

Steve, How close to flying them are you feeding? If closer then 12 hours that could be the problem.

Hey Steve, I've been right here, just listening for a change! :)I would just watch them close but don't worry to much. It is most likely just the heat. Does the bird you were talking about have any other symptoms?

Thom, no other symptoms. plus, it looks and acts perfectly normal, eating today just like normal. not sure about heat, as its been thru the entire summer w/o a problem, and now the temps are in the lower 70's, so i doubt its heat related. maybe a bit of bad/moldy grain? i suppose its possible, but highly unlikely as other birds would surely have shown similar symptoms. i'll be watching it closely. i have a double kitbox, so i hope it doesn't spread to the other side, which is most likely since plywood is not a good barrier against anything. thanx for responding. ---------- Steve in Blue Point, NY

Hey Steve, I'm sorry, I thought the bird might have been working harder and over heated it's self. What ever the reason it does not sound like it is sick. I would keep a close eye on it until you are sure it's alright.

Steve I think your birds who you were flying had water in their crop; and thils is the only way they can regurgitat their food . YOu can fly them with feed in their crop with out water and they will not regurgitat it up. Nothing wrong with the birds. Hot weather does not help either. richard

Richard, why would undigested food still be in the birds crop almost 24 hours later? i hadn't flew them, or fed them at this point. also, where the bird perched i could see some regurgitated seed. none of the other birds have shown any symptoms. and its been mild here, but not hot. besides, my birds have water all the time, don't yours? ---------- Steve in Blue Point, NY

I was not aware you fed them 24 hours before you fed them. Might have been some bad grain, maybe not all the grains were bad. do my birds have water in front of them all the time? No

Steve, This bird could have the start of a compacted crop which can turn into sour crop which is like thrush. If this is the case, the pigeons breath will smell and the crop will be bloated and spongy. If it looks otherwise ok, it may have a partial blockage and this can be have several causes. The most common is a canker nodule in the base of the crop or in the stomach. I would seperate the bird, allow it to drink, but give no food for the nextday or so. When/if the bird is ready to feed I would give it some grit which will help to break up any compacted food. First off I would treat for canker to be on the safe side. I'm not saying that this is correct vetinarary advice, but that's what I've done in the past. Once they get sour crop they can go downhill pretty fast. Good luck. Pete

Richard, could you explain to me why your birds don't have water all the time? i'm new to all this, so i just assumed they needed water all day, especially during the heat of the summer. Pete, thanx for the ideas and excellent explanation on canker. i've treated both my kits in august for canker, and cocci, so i'm sure its not that, but i will check the bird closer. if i do smell or detect something, i'll update here, and thanx again. ---------- Steve in Blue Point, NY

Steve well I have been out of state for several days that is why no answer. I was just trying to help as I though this web site was to help other roller flyers with what we have learned over the years. It appears I upset people with my answer to YOUR question. I never said I keep the water away in very hot weather, never abused my birds, People assumed that. Check the word assume , ASS,U,Me. think about it and see if you can figure out why I said that, and why there are time my birds don't have water in front of them. Richard Richard
