"Why should we be in such desperate haste to succeed,
and in such desperate enterprises?
If a man does not keep pace with his companions,
perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer."
(Henry David Thoreau--1817-1862)

Think about it.

I am in total agreement with you , I think. I have always enjoyed the roller hobby for the quiet peace & relaxation it brings me.

I don't get all worked up with them when they have bad day, I'm not up to speed every day either . Many of us would fall far short if we had to meet the perfection we demand of our birds !

Sometimes I think I hear a different drummer, but as with music , to each , his own !

I just came off the thread "Muffs"...and am in hopes a couple of the guys will read this particular poem. Think outside of the box sometimes..it helps cope with your everyday stuff.

Open the door and hope for the best on fly day. When I do this, I love my birds no matter how bad or good they perform for me.

I feel we should all fly our own birds in our own way and allow others to do the same & with respect. It is a recreational hobby, & all this "Do it my way" stuff, changes , nor impresses no-one.

I totally agree with you Scot..as we both seem to agree with Mr. Thoreau in that each person listens to his own thoughts and not everyone listening to one or two for direction. Drones..absolutely not..I listen to my own drummer as I pay my own feed bill and enjoy my hobby.

I tend to think that Mr. Thoreau was saying that it's okay to be different. If you ask a question and I give you advise but you choose to do things your way, why should I get upset? Why should I worry about what you do in your yard? Wouldn't my time be better spent worrying and working on my own birds? I don't pay your feed bill or put in the labor to care for your birds. The BR is what it is today because there were/are folks out there that chose to follow that different drummer. I always say that every fancier adds value to the hobby in their own way.

To me he looks to be an early socialist making an excuse to have no drive , that different drummer that he speaks of is in reality the drummer of the masses being led by sheep.

Guys
We all have our own priorities in life, not one of us excel in every area of our lives. We are all individuals who care about our birds performance but not all of us are willing to do what is necessary to claim bragging rights. To some, bragging rights are not a priority, to some, enjoyment, friendship and camaraderie are the priority.
Due to the vast differences of opinions on varied topics , is may be in the best interest of the Roller Hobby, that we "TRY" to be a little more tolerant of those who do not hold the same opinions, as ourselves.
That does not mean we must conform to another's "standard" but we may try to accept and tolerate another's standard.
To some the drum beat is loud and annoying but to some the drum beat is rhythmic and melodic. Few enjoy the drum solo but when played in concert with the rest of the instruments, the drum seems to fit right in.
Try to listen to the full orchestra and see how much better it sounds than when one instrument plays loud and long.

Most things in life boil down to the old phrase you get outta something what you put into it. Some other phrases that have stuck with me:
-If you can't take care of your animals son, don't have them - Grandpa Holleran
- You can't have good stock you gotta have the best - Gobel Kiser an old local chicken fighter
-You buy cheap stuff, you sell cheap stuff, but good stuff will always be in demand - Grandpa Holleran
- Better to sit on the roof than listen to a querrelsome wife - King Solomon
-Everything else in Proverbs

Socialist, communist, call em what you want but when a man says something that makes sense, it only makes sense to take heed. The post is about one statement that he made, not his political views.

"Be not angry that you cannot make others as you wish them to be, since you cannot make yourself as you wish to be." (Thomas a' Kempis 1379-1471)...just thoughts to keep the boat on an even keel.
