Only if you live where it's warm year around, if not, plan on spending a lot to run heaters, I live in Michigan where it still is too cold up until the last of May when I can safely breed without the young ones freezing to death unless I run heat lamps on them. ---------- Lew

vhawk, the ideal time to breed birds is when the cheery tree blossoms.but with pigeons, any time is ok .as long as you have them healthy and fit.and within the rite enviroment. ----------

when to mate your birds. Are you raising young to fly? If so then figure out the date where you can safely settle your birds with out being slaughtered by the hawks..then work backwards to get the date to mate your birds. When you mate your birds they should lay about 10 days after mating. 17 to 20 days all the young should be hatched. 30 days from then they are weaned and then in the air in 5 or so day after weaning them. You want the young in the air right away after weaning them. Setting in the loft after weaning is LOST fly time. This gives the birds the most time in the air before one has to pen them up in the fall. "Any time is good time",,,,,I disagree with that. We have to figure out the time according what we want to do with our young, flying, show or what ever. Richard

I agree with Richard about the BOP issue. You need to figure out the BOP cycle for your area and try to breed so that you are weaning and training young birds when you are least likely to get hit. If you have to lock down young birds for too long you run the risk of them getting too strong and wanting to take off before they are fully settled. Good Luck! Tracey

vhawk....It really depends on what part of the country you live in. I live in Ohio and start my breeding season in mid Feb... And "DON'T' be too hasty with culling....

Hey Vhawk, most of the breeders I know breed year round. But some big name flyers told me to wait until December to start my breeding program here in the High Desert.
Where do you live at vhawk?
