Here is a question, I have a pair of large redtails living close by, these guys have 5 to 6 foot or larger wingspans that have taken up residency in my area, they have dove at my birds without any luck, there so big the rollers have no problem staying away from them. The question is with these huge birds in the area will they keep the coopers away, I have not seen any of the fast sharks for sometime since the redtails showed up. Can any one answer this.
Thanks

They are very protective of there area and they should chase the sharks. How close is close?Anyway should help,But they can and will take a roller if coming out of cover. They hunt the same way a cooper hunts,I have lost a bird to a red tail in the past.JDA

As Close is in the woods across the road from me, Yes the biggest one dove at my birds yesterday while they were flying but wasn't able to get any then flew off, today both red tails made a pass over the loft about 300 feet up while some of my birds were setting on top but didn't bother them, the redtails aren't as hungry as the coopers (yet) hopefully I can fly a while longer before I have to lock them in, Here in michigan the weather is starting to get cold at nite and the leafs have changed color with some falling already.

I have plenty of Coopers and Red Tails where I live and this is my experience. Coopers- If I lose a bird, I will lose it to a Cooper. Red Tails- Mine don't even look at my birds. I've never seen them dive on my birds and I have seen my birds go up and fly around them. I have never seen a Red tail get after a Cooper and with the number of Cooperw in my area, I think they co-exist just fine.

I have lost birds to both coopers and red tails, red tail seems to try to catch a bird after it lands, when the cooper, sharp shin,&the falcon has no trouble catching in the air. I have saved birds 3 times after red tail attacks by charging the hawk when it lands after catching a bird to rest. Dennis

Coopers are the ones that get my birds (both rollers and homers). Red-tails are slower so our pigeons have the chance to escape. I think once Red-tails claim their territory other BOPs stay away. It is just a guess. My guess also is that Red-tails have stronger grip and can carry their prey easier.

When we were in California for the NBRC convention, we watched a red tail take a roller out of the center of the kit. Came back again and got another one. When they hunt, they hunt in pairs. We were all laughing at the pair of red tails trying to catch a bird from the kit until they shut us all up…not once but twice. I used to think that the red tail is too big and too slow of bop until he proved me and all spectators wrong. Now I view red tail differently and with respect.

I have had a pair of redtails that have nested in my back woods now the last two years, and since they have nested ther I have had no other hawks bother me from late spring to early fall.
Before they settled in my area I would experience attacks from all kinds of different hawks all summer. They definatly are very territorial here and they don't bother my rollers at all. They will come down in my back yard and catch frogs and snakes from my creek but don't give the rollers the time of day. I live in Mich. also and am glad to have the redtails around. Terry

I think between the two, Redtail is better to have. I have to admit that Redtail definitely is very strong and can carry its prey while Coopers may not be able to carry its prey so it tries to kill/eat the bird on the ground. I also agree that Coopers are adapting in their hunting mode here in California. One of the very successful hawks I have here uses a diving technique to gain advantage. And they take down both of my homers and rollers. Redtail definitely will keep out other BOPs away if they stay put and have a nest.

all can say is that its not to cool having red tails or coopers liveing in any of are areas both can be extreamly dreadful. i can tell that when a red tail learns how to get your birds it s all bad them bad boys wont miss sorry to tell you. i had one in my neck of the woods back in 2001 when i lived in fairfield ca that could hunt just as good or better than a falcon this red tail never missed. im not the only one that can claim this niether. i hope the best for you
