I DQ but I did have fun I learnd from a misteak that made me DQ by flying A out bird vs A bird that is stiff but kits and flys. I'll get them next time. I remember my first comp..it was the fall fly in 04.....Man I was so nervous.....That year..I just entered to get my feet wet....I was flying a mixture of Scott C., Mort Emai, Ruby Roller, Chuck Roe and Turner birds....I was still trying to figure families out...anyway...I scored like either 12 point or 32 points...cant remember...but all I can say..is that was the most fun I had in pigeon flying...watching everyones kits fly...I think Dwight Wallace won the region that year....and Joe Urbon was right there too....maybe even Chuck Roe...but anyway...it was a blast....
I tell you this...the new guys starting off now....seem to be coming in with both guns blazing...thank god they are rookies and run out of bullets before they go in for the kill...LOL....pull those birds next time Larry!!!!....

Mann/Larry, The most important thing is that you learned something by getting involved. And it sounds like you both did. Good job. A DQ is never any fun, but I have done it myself, and I see some of the best roller men around do it every year. So managing feed is one of the most critical items, and it can be difficult with the weather changes, wind, rain, cooler temps, and the molt to consider. Bird selection is right up there, too. Actually, I see more guys getting burned by taking chances with problem birds, than I see DQing. Coming up to the week or two before the comp, any bird that leaves the kit, comes down early, wing-switches, etc. gets grounded for the competition. But you never know about these birds. There are never any gurantees. It's nice, though, to have enough birds, now, to substitute. It's only been a few years when I had to go with the birds that I had! Cliff

Mann,
This was my first year too. I wasn't competitive either but I got my feet wet and feel like I'm hooked now. Maybe it's just becasue I'm green to the comp thing but I don't see it as negative like some do. I share your excitement.

Billy, Congratulations on your first year flying competitions! There is nothing negative about competition flying and trying to improve your family. The problem only comes up when folks forget to respect others that don't share the same passions. Good Luck on your second year in competition. Tracey
