I am told that sulmet is used to control coccidiosis and to be given to birds on rainy or damp days. And you treat for 5 days then follow with probiotics.

But say you had a few days of rain put your birds on it for 5 days then a few days later the weathers bad again. Would you start the treatment over again? Or is too much of this gonna be really bad for the birds? I had a friend tell me to just continue to follow with probiotics.

I can't see any reason to do this unless there is cocci diagnosed. If you give Sulmet to breeders, you run the risk of sterile eggs shortly thereafter. Keep them well fed, the loft dry and you should have minimal troubles. BTW, it never hurts to give them probiotics. JMO

Your birds will build up a immunity to sulmet if it is used to often. I just started my birds on a regiment of vitamins That Cliff recomended to me when he was down. I could not believe the difference in my birds in 3 days. Cod Liver oil 2-3 times a week in the feed, you can also mix breweres yeast with garlic and pro bios in the feed at the same time and the oil will make it stick to the grain. I also mix redcell in the feed once per month but it can also be put in the water, This contains many needed vitamins and the iodine needed to kill any germs that will kill the embryo or prevent eggs from not hatching. I have also started using pigeon builder, breeders edge, vitamins AD&E, and calcium gluconate in the water on different days and also rotate a day for ACV. I also have started using wormout with coccicide pills on all of my squekers before moving them to the kitboxes and I also have left them in the stock loft longer until they can fly to the top perch to reduce the stress of moving them to early which causes the coccidiosis. I asked a few other rollermen what they did and alot do not give anymore than grit and fresh water and feed. If you will watch commies when they are out and about they are always picking at something and can get all of the vitamins and minerals from the earth that our birds that are in cages cannot, so to me when Cliff told me my birds were vitamin deffecient it just made sense and these things besides the pills I mentioned are all natural and not a medicine. The only time I will use a medicine is when I get new birds I will treat them with 4in1 followed by pro biotics and the initial treatment for worms and coccidiosis moving out of the stock loft. Plenty of vitamins should produce healthy birds that should be able to fight off any form of sicknes is my thoughts.

TheGame, no, the better prevention would be to keep the birds fed up properly and the loft kept clean from droppings as the cocci parasite is spread through them (water drinkers can also spread cocci, a bit of bleach in the water, enough to destroy them before they enter the bird through the watering hole). Tony there was a conversation the other day about the bleach evaporating from the water with in 24 hours so If you didn't change the water everyday wouldnt it be pointless ? I have never used bleach besides to clean the water fountains so I cant realy comment on the use of bleach, that is just what ive read.

No Steve, Not 5min but 5hrs,If not over night. When you refill with fresh water put a cap of bleach in water for birds to drink, that is one way to purge your birds, Another is with epsom salts.JDA
