It,s a hobby and people should keep it that way, nothing hard about it as long as you start with a strong family that is of a pure strain, and go slow with a purpose in mine.JDA

I would have to say its a little of both, yes you can start with a good family but if you dont know the scienc behide it, then your birds will never get better. 20 or 30 years from now rollers might be way better than the birds we have today.

i have to say its science why i say that is you think you hit the right pair but it didn't work out for you so you have to play around until you hit the right pair
and also i think its an art why i say that is if you under stand your family of birds when you do that you can make good spinner

As easy as it sounds, you would think for birds to propagate would be easy and natural.......WRONG
Sometimes they need alittle help from us. So to keep this simple, I would have to say from my "experience" it is alittle of both...

I believe it's a combination of science and then it becomes an art over time.

The practice of inbreeding, linebreeding and outcrossing is a science, if your good at it like the legends its becomes an art.

For instance: NFL rookie Mark Sanchez is learning the science of a NFL Quarterback, Tom Brady, Peyton Manning and Drew Brees practice the art.

Gringo,

I have always said that selection of the right breeders, and building a good stud of spinners, is an art. Science is one of the tools that you use in this art, but science alone will not get the job done, that is the trap that the pedigree breeders fall into.

How much science did the forefathers of the breed know ? not much if any , it is an Art for the most part that evolves around a basic understanding of this complicated breed, but a tad of science where breeding principles are concerned is awful helpful also.

It's a strange pseudo science. Yes you can breed on certain semi scientific lines such as line breeding and breeding indexes etc, but the birds chosen for that programe have to be evalutated by human judgement and as such is subjective. If we were breeding chickens for egg yeild then egg laying trials and such systems of selection would predominate, but there is still a human making the final selection and judgement on the structure and health of the final breeders.
Roller breeding is a mile away from being that precise a science, because we have no precise parameters to judge our birds on. I may select one bird because it looks faster in the roll than another, but that may just be an illusion created by the individuals color pattern and my failing eyes.
We don't have scientific tools to measure the speed of the roll, although it would be possible to make such instruments. The style of the roll is not just a matter of comparing the image of the rolling bird with a drawing as some would suggest, it is an impression, and if we are immpressed. then we favour it.

what first started as a hobby/interest/pass time seems like could take a life time to maybe never get out what i put in even breeding from proven birds still seems impossible to build a good reliable working team thats without the superior qauilty that i've seen in some individual birds some roller breeders must just get good quick or lucky or know the art/science behind breeding a top team

If it was a science, I don't think the old, blue collar, black country boys would have ever developed this breed.

Here's a couple definitions of the word science:

1.Seytematic knowledge of the physical or material world gained through observation and experimentation.

2.Skill, esp. reflecting a precise application of facts or principles; proficiency.

Hmmmm sounds like William Pensom.

If ten thousand monkeys typed for ten thousand years they would eventually type the complete works of Shakespeare. Just because a bird has the tools dont mean he can do the job. Thats what you have to breed for. To accomplish that goal it takes OBSERVATION.Then it takes ACTION on the observation. Then it takes observation then it takes action then it takes observation...

The pigeon hobby is an illness and many of us caught the desease when we were young. It may have laid dormet from time to time, but always comes back and sometimes with avengence. It is fortunate that it usually only affects one of a married couple, but if it has affected both then it can be only God who can help you. I think you are shit out of luck, Jim. You have to bring it to only God.
