bought some kit birds(12) from a good friend. once i brought them home and settled them for a day or two. then i started homing them for two weeks. once i got the new birds up wit my kit its like these birds are learning to roll all over again, i now that when they were back at mt frends house they were rolling good. but now there back to tailsitting and flips. how long well it take to get there groove back? also i got one young bird out of the 12 that flys very fast and low as if somethings chasing it. he wont kit and he lands were ever he wants. i tried to get him up in the air by throwing him be he just comes right back to me and lands. when i flag him he flys like a rocket. i have had one other bird like this that i culled i think its genetics.i could be wrong!

When i decided that i was going to keep rollers sgain i decided to go see a friend who at that time was unable to fly his birds due to silly work hourss,
I ended buying his full yearling kit. he told me that not all would turn out to be great but i wouldnt be ddisapointed with the birds that did come good. I tried to home them like you did but they just wouldnt come back to me. in the end i decided that by what i had seen them performing like when trying to home them that my best option would be to keep them lockd down and breed out of them. this was 3 years ago now and i have still the same birds and no other bought in, Infact they were a few that wasnt verry good but still i gave them a go in the breeders and funny as it his they have turnd out to be great breeders. My advice to you would be splitt the cocks and hens and pair them up in feb march and see what the youngsters turn out like. no dougth==ht you will have some good birds there and it would be a shame to not give them a chance just bcause they are not doing any good bcause they are unsettled. just my view. harrison H,K.R ROLLER LOFT HULL UK

The young bird sounds like a typical bird that is just starting, just weaned. My weaned birds take a few weeks to figure it out, but act similar to the your young bird. I have had a few take 6 weeks to really start flying. Luckly I usually have the next round to put him wiht and by then he has developed enough to fly. Be patient with him. The other birds sound like they got out of flying shape. Check with your friend and make sure you are feed the right amount, and the right kinds of food. too much food gives them to much control, and they can stop rolling. Too much wheat can do the same in different families. If my young birds arew just flipping and need a little help coming into the roll, I give them straight milo for a week. That will usually get them past the flipping stage. Talk to who you got them from and feed them right and remember you may have to get them back in to shape. Good luck

R T would you feed kit rollers white or red wheat and how much? Would you mix it with other feed? ---------- Lew

Lew I wish I could tell you a difference in the wheat. I live in a small community, and can get only red wheat. As an example of how small the town is, last year graduting high school class had 32 students. 28 were of them were related. lol I am playing with mixing now. and time of year makes a difference. But my observation with Jay Starley's line and Ken Billings Line. Wheat will usually give me better style, faster spinning. I also get better kit chemistry. But I loose freguency. Milo loosen up the birds, more waterfalling, not as tight in the roll. Depth doesn't really change on either. As far as mixing goes it depends on what I want from them. I also can not get peas, and I know many have said they can change behavior. I do mix a pellet. This I use to help with time up. If it gets cold I add the pellets. If not I keep to 1 tablespoon per bird of 50/50 wheat and milo mix. I said, that and my birds are more 75 percent wheat and 25 percent milo right now. GO figure. But I have few young birds that are rolling early or late on the brakes and I am hoping the wheat will get their timing right. Are NBRC fly regionals are the NOV 7th. A lot of other things are at play along with your feed. I live at 5800 feet and have a lot of wind that usually keeps my birds form skying out. Mess around with it and take notes. and you will find what works for you.
have fun and good luck ---------- RT Williams

Thanks For the info R T, I also feed pettets, My kit birds act as though they are starved when being feed but I know they get more than a tablespoon each, it's more like a cupful each, maybe I'm feeding to much, i will try mixing in some red wheat. ---------- Lew
