The Fall 11 Bird has got to be hard to judge if the whole kit is working.

hay winwardrollers myself i think a 11 bird kit is easier to judge then a 20 bird because a 11 bird kit has less birds in it and when you get into the 1/2 and 2/3 and full turns 11 birds is easier like i said ---------- Donny James "Fly The Best And Cull The Rest" "Saying One Thing;Doing Its Another" "Keep Your Head Planted In The Sky And Wings Spanned Wide" 1996 Piedmont Roller Club Lifetime Achievement Recipient Portsmouth Roller Club Participation Award System Recipient 1994 '96 '97 And 2000 2001 Limestone,Ohio Sportsman's Club Lifetime Member Recipient 2002Portsmouth Roller Club Certified Judge 2004Portsmouth Roller Club Lifetime Member Recipient "Miss Portsmouth"NBRC/90/J311 Rusty Dun Check Self Hen First Bird To Get Certified In Portsmouth Roller Club History With A Score Of 53 Judge By Joe Roe The 1993 World Cup Winner And John Bender The 1994 World Cup Winner

Donnie Hope all is well with you with you health.
In the 11 bird you have to assign each bird individually with a number were as the twenty you are watching the group as a whole. Lets say the 8 birds break at once is it easier to give an... 8.. count or 2..1..1..3..2..2..3..2 count. If the birds are really working it seems that the judge is going to be busy. I have never judge 11 birds flies or really seen 11 birds flies we just don't fly the 11 bird much in our area. bwinward

Brad, it is hard to judge if the kit is real active and if the birds break in groups. You have to make individual assessments; whether or not the quality was sufficient to score and assign each individual a depth score. I have seen real good kits be underscored because the birds broke in unison and it was very difficult to assign scores simultaneously. I dont know any way to overcome it except for practice. I believe with experience and by paying alot of attn, a judge can score a team very accurately even if they are breaking frequently and in bunches. It takes just a little bit of different viewing eye than judging a 20 bird team. One strategy to bear in mind if you're building an 11 bird team, it will most often pay you back in scoring if your birds dont break together, but instead put on a steady stream of waterfall type activity. It gives a judge a point of reference to gauge depth from, it allows individuals to be evaluated for quality and also allows for scoring to be kept up with as the birds work. Most of us have those birds that are perhaps a bit over-frequent or excessive depth where they disrupt the chemistry of a good 20 bird team, but spin with good quality, those are exactly what the 11-bird competition is built for. I believe for 11-bird teams, kit action is actually a negative trait, the exception being that most good rollers perform their best spins as part of a break with their kitmates. --------- Jon
If it were easy, everybody would do it

Jon I have seen some pretty good waterfall kit that birds roll out of the kit not in unision...birds always going.. but still have a core group to return to after rolling. I am just thinking if I put up 11 exeptional birds they are going to roll in big bunches. I would guess that instead of flying a smaller group of 5 to 7 birds which seem easier to keep track of.. a larger group of 11 should spawn more activity than a smaller easier to manage group of 5 to 7 birds. Good luck evaluating 8 to 11 birds going simultaneously..I'm just stating it is not an easy thing to do but a compentant judge will always find a worthy winner. Brad
