my 1yr old female pittbull, is just finishing her last week of her first "heat". which has been her 3rd week. i also have a male pittbull also which is the same age as her and is her future mate. now over these last few weeks he as been going crazy. and i how he has matured also in his own way. just recently he been lefting his leg to piss. i think he started doing that when my bitch came into heat. but anyways before all this my female was the guard dog and has access to the hole yard, but since coming into her heat she been locked down tighter then roller pigeons in a kitbox. to keep from unwanted breeding this time, anyhow she coming off of the heat and the swelling has went down some. but if i release her back to the entire yard and allow her to mingle wit my male. can he bring her back into "heat"?......(he has become a hump machine these days, and he can be quite charming)!lol.

fontanabound,

Female comes into first heat cycle between 6 to 12 months of age.

The cycle is generally for 2 times a year.

Heat cycle lasts for 3 weeks at a time.

I'd advise you to keep her locked down, under your watchful eye, and away from "him" until you see no more signs of blood or vulva swelling.

Cats are induced ovulators, sensation of male cat will induce them to ovulate. dogs fortunately dont respond like that. Hormone cycles, im sure theres plenty of literature online u can find, or call the vet.

I,ts best to keep them apart until she is completely out of the heat. What will happen if you let them out together, he will continue trying to hump her until she gets pist off and a fight will break out from it. A diff senario: Sometimes if breeding, it may be a bit too late and on the breeding part, and the female will still allow for him to hit it, & then decide once they are locked, she will realize that this is not what she wanted . And your male may end up getting hurt badly if theres no supervision. Best thing to do is keep them apart from each other and other straglers.

Usualy once she comes in heat, it could go as far as 3weeks. Keep in mine that she still has the blood scent on her. So you may want to wash her down & a couple of times. She will come to heat as a generaly rule, 2 x a year. But I,ve seen them go up to 18 months. Very important, once you do breed her, I will highly suggest for you to get a "clean up shot" once she delivers. If not, they may have heat cycle problems. I would wait untill the swelling is gone.

I always figure one week coming in
one week in
one week going out and
one week for safety!

In the first week the bitch will not normally stand for the dog to breed her
second week she will do everything she can to get bred, digging under, climbing out or chewing thru the fence.
Sometimes even in the third week she will continue to do so.
Most of the time by the fourth week all the hanky-panky is over until she comes back in.

No sense taking a chance.

Our male Rat terrier impregnated our 5 year old Rat at 4 1/2 months. We found out during her spading operation which then turned into a spade/abortion. That joker is a Stud.

fontanabound.....Why don't you get a "professional" opinion. Contact a local Vet or the local Animal Shelter. It's 'FREE" and you will get the right answer. Not a "backyard" breeders opinion....
Iam a professional dog trainer...and I wouldn't answer your question.... Go figure??? lol
