Do you think W. H. Pensom and the other roller breeders of that era had it a little easier when it came to the BOP? I ask this question because of the wide spread use of DDT pesticides in the 40's and 50's that decimated some BOP populations, The hardest hit species; Peregrine Falcons, Sharp-shinned Hawks, Cooper’s Hawks, Eurasian Sparrowhawks, Osprey, Bald Eagles, and White-tailed Eagles. DDT has been banned since 1972. John

you are correct John. In fact both the initial development period in the UK and the spread of the sport in the US in the 60's-80's was during favorable (ie. reduce populations)BOP conditions.

In the early 1960's Carl Dorton had so many problems with Hawks he almost gave up raising Pensom rollers. Yes, the majority did not have issues but some did. Also, fyi - John it is William Hyla Pensom.

Joe, is that a question for me? Don't no what your really after. I was just saying that would be great spinners had a less of a chance of being hit by BOP in those days.

Joe, with all respect, I was just noting their was less of an issue with BOP in that era. I think what your saying is, Pensom was already a great pigeon fancier when he came to the United States and the smaller population of BOP had nothing to do with his greatness. I can agree with that. Maybe I should remove that line?

If you have a problem BOP you can apply for a trapping permit from the Dept of fish and game, If approved they will drop off the trap and relocate the bird for you.

During WHP's time in England there was not a great BOP problem, as most flyers at that time lived in city areas. Bill was a well known roller fancier when he lived in England due to his writings in the magazines such as fur and feather, but he really came into his own and increased his standing in the Hobby when he moved to the U.S.A. If there was ever a problem back in those days it could be controlled, as the BOP were not protected by law These days perigrines and hawks abound in city areas and they have legal protection. I am guessing at whatever has been deleted (makes a thread damned hard to follow when that has been done, and makes no sense of the complaint to a new reader), but I would say that the BOP's or lack of them wouldn't make a roller fancier great, but guys like WHP, Ollie harris etc may not been able to have made such a name for themselves and developed their respective strains if they had todays BOP attacks to contend with. In todays climate the playing field is not so flat, with some guys driven out of the hobby, and others left relatively in peace to fly all year round. We have to be greatful for the fact that the breed was developed to a high degree in the era of clear skys. Who knows, if the BOP problem had been so widespead in the 1st half of the last century as it is now (and still spreading), maybe the roller hobby as we know it would not exist? Pete.

Pete, this is what I deleted "that may have contributed to his greatness" meaning its always a good thing to not have your star roller picked off and that would aid in your favor towards greatness or greaterness.

Thanks for those words John. can't see exactly where they were taken from, context would help. Once we start censoring and editing what someone else doesn't like, we are ceasing to have a debate IMO. Well, everyone who has acheived greatness needs everything going for them including a bit of luck, and I think that those flying without the BOP problem either now or then would be lucky, so I agree with your statement that those earlier guys had an aid to greatness that most of us don't. We on the other hand have all the collective knowledge handed down from those guys and those that have followed since, so I guess that is contributing to our greatness,LOL Cheers, Pete.

John, If you want to find out about DDT read Mark Levine's book Liberty and Tyranny, he was in the White House with Reagans administration. There's a whole section where he talks about that being a crock.
