Hi

I have some rollers that will do several rolls and then land. This is when they are flying at a low height. When flying higher they won't do that many rolls. My dad said these rollers are short roller (is that true).

Also are badge tumblers the same as birmingham rollers. If you pair them together is it cross breeding or not?

Thanks

The badges are not the same as the Birmingham Rollers two different birds.

The best thing is to go to a known breeder that fly's Birmingham Rollers and purchase a pair or two. Because you really don't know what you have right now. By buying from a known breeder you will start in the correct way and just get rid of the ones you got right now. This is what I recommend you doing.

There are badge rollers red check badge, red bar badge, mealy bar badge and so on. Badge is just white on the head over one eye for example. In a show they class them in a marked class. If you have a tumbler with white on it head, its still a tumbler, nothing to do with a roller.JDA

I got rollers from proper Birmingham roller breeders. These are good pigeons.

So are you saying that a short roller is not a roller??

What I,am saying is you said you had badge tumblers if there rollers why are you calling them tumblers?? Anyway badge is not a breed it is just white marks on the head of a pigeon.JDA

According to a old timer that knew Pensom personally he told me that the red badges were indeed Birmingham rollers. He said they were just cultivated for frequency and short rolls so they could score lots of points in kit comps.

bage is indeed a colour pattern, but it is also a breed of English tumbler. (confusion is understandable)They are flown in tumbler competitions. The mag is another tumbler breed but they generally have a different clour.
They are believed to come from common stock that includes the roller but are now regarded as a different breed.

George - You ask your old timer friend if the badges are Black country rollers and I Bet you he will tell you no. If he is an old timer he will know what I am talking about. That is like saying fireballs are Birminghams also but they are different as night and day from the black country breeders birds.

Either way you look at it, to me a tumbler or short roller has no place in my kitbox. But if thats what you like go for it.

Thanks for the advice people. Everyone has their own opinions and I appreciate that. So if I bred a "short roller" to a birmingham roller would the young be classified as cross breds or not?

darkhorse ,you have two different breeds of pigeon there, the badges are completely different from the rollers i should know ive got them both , keep your badges seperatly , if you cross them you will mostly breed short roller/ tumblers , this was the wrong place to ask this question as most us fliers wont know what your talking about , badge tumblers are a uk breed originated in the midlands of england , whats confusing is that the term " badge " also refers to the facial marking of pigeons , have a look at the post on here titled mason birds theres a picture by rudy zupp of proper red bagde english tumblers , now i know george mason had some red badge tumblers from a top english flier named burt walton , these he sold now it would seem that theres some of them in the us my only concern is that they may be getting confused with mason birmingham rollers

If you breed lets say a 5 feet roller that came out of your Birmingham family to a 50 feet Birmingham roller from the same family just because it's a 5 foot short roller doesn't mean you crossing it.I wouldn't breed a 5 footer just using an example.. now if you cross another breed into your birds you crossing it..or there is another term for crossing too like cross breeding your family of Birminghams into my family of Birmingham.an out cross to an unrelated stock...some ppl inbreed, linebreed or out cross..but using the same breed of birds. I hope this helps. ----------

sbrc,
There are in fact proper Badge Tumblers in the U.S.. I know of an English gentleman in Ca. that raises them. I think the breed is still rather rare here in the U.S. so most BR men have never seen them and confuse them with "badge" marked BR's.

darkhorse09,
Keep your Badge Tumblers seperate from the BR's. They are two seperate breeds and crossing them would be considered crossbreeding. My guess is if you did cross them you would get a short tumbler that didn't meet the standard of either breed, in other words garbage. I really like the performance description of the Badges and would love to see a kit at work.

Thanks for the advice. The pigeons I have look like this:

Let me know if these look like badges to you. They have got roller rings on and the 2nd image is hen that was given to me by a friend in the UK who keeps rollers. The red cock in the 1st image, I gave the ring number to the club secretery and he told me that this pigeon is from a good breed. I could try uploading a video of it flying (once the weather gets better in UK!)

The pigeons in the 1st link got MRPC (midlands roller pigeon club) rings on srbc. The 2nd one is a East Anglian Flying Roller Club (EAFRC)

Early on in this topic I explained how they flew. So therefore are you saying that they are Birmingham rollers?

Thanks

yes birmingham rollers, just because they are club rung birds dosnt mean that they are any good as performers there are good and bad rollers , you really need to find your local club ,join it ,then you can get to know people who fly the good birds , you need to see some good birds up to give you an idea what to look for , good luck cheers fred
ps theres a mrpc show and auction in bromgrove next week call jay he will tell you about it

True say srbc, the stock might be from a good breed but the pigeons might be rubbish.

I am a member of the MRPC (well my dad is and I do go with him to the show) and did go to the show this year in summer. I have seen jay (speedball's) rollers and they are amazing. Really liked them.

Are you based in the uk srbc?

darkhorse, this is the problem you will suffer when you get birds from here, there and everywhere. you need to go round the flies and find birds that suit you and your environvent then purchase as many of that breeder as you can. making sure they are relativly close bred. put them in breeder and sort and keep all the good birds to start your own family.
