Hey Guys,i havnt posted in a while,i hope everyone are good,i am abit worrid about the performance of my birds at the moment, its the 1st time im working with these birds so i dont no what to expect,i breed the birds from good stock, after about 3 months of flying the young, they started rolling, they came in earli into the roll, doing some good 20ft rolls and very tight no less than twice a minute, sometimes even 3 times a minute,i was amazed at the performance at that age,but now at just over 4 months old its back to just flying most of the time,if im lucky all i get is 1 roll every 2 minutes, the roll is still tight and a good depth, but its just not happening as much as it use too,,,Could the birds be going through a phase of some sort at this age or am i doing some thing wrong?,i havnt really changed anything in the past 1 month besides for the bio pro,but thats only because i ran out and didnt get a chance to buy again, also they still getting the feed that they got when they were born with the pellets in,could the pellets be affecting them some how?any advice?? ---------- Shukz(RSA)

----- Shukz, I don't know how often you are flying, but after they come into the roll, fly only every other day or even every 3rd day and see if that helps. The birds do go thru different stages also and it might be that. Keep us informed if this helps..... Peace! MJ

Shukri, Are they moulting? It hurts to fly let alone spin when they are in the moult. Patience they are young. :)

You are right Shukz, they do go through phases for the first year or more. Some come in early and late but they do roll or I would say get very active as young bird kits and then go flat for months and they come right back and usually the better birds will get even better. Some roll short and get deeper and some rolled deep and shorten up some. Most young bird kits are all active but not with good clean rolling and good breaks until mature.
It is good advice to fly them less as they get older but that is usually when they are rolling great unless you fly the roll out of them which can be done with seasoned kit of rollers if flown too many consecutive days. Give a good team two or three days rest and fed right and they come out smoken!
Your first year is really getting a handle on feeding them right and manipulation comes with older hold over teams. I would defintately change the feed from time to time and see if that stimulates them. Do it for more than one day as it will take three or four days to really see a change in them if the feed helps or not. You can try feeding less protien or more peas either way depending on the feed you are all ready feeding. You can try more wheat and less pellets for a while and see if they get more active. Remeber also they should not be in rolling conditon year round, that is, feed them up and rest them from time to time if they are good performers.
Dont be discouraged though, that is what rollers do at 4 or 6 months in my back yard also. Bill C
