Greatest pitchers of all-time. 300 or more wins with 3000 or more strike outs and a lifetime earned run average of 3.00 or less.
Walter Johnson 417 3508 2.17 Tom Seaver 311 3640 2.86
Yep, that is it. Two. One from the olden days and one from the modern era. I look at Tom Seaver a little differently than I use to.
I will list those with 300 wins because this may be the real true single measuring stick of greatness.
Cy Young 511 Walter Johnson 417 Grover Cleveland Alexander 373 Christy Mathewson 373 Warren Spahn 363 Pud Galvin 361 Kid Nichols 361 **Gregg Maddux 355 **Roger Clemens 354 Tim Keefe 342 **Steve Carlton 329 John Clarkson 328 Eddie Plank 326 **Nolan Ryan 324 **Don Sutton 324 **Phil Niekro 318 **Gaylord Perry 314 Tom Seaver 311 Charles Radbourn 310 Mickey Welch 307 Tom Glavine 305 Lefty Grove 300 Early Wynn 300 Randy Johnson 300*
* Still playing
**Pitchers who also reached the 3,000 strike out threshold, but did not earn 3.00 or less earned run average..
Troublesome exclusions are Sandy Koufax; Bob Gibson; Juan Marichal and I am sure you can name a few more as well. None of them won 300 games. Several of the 300 game winners had earned run averages above 3.00 or did not achieve 3000 strike outs. One or the other or both.
How about the likes of Robin Roberts; Whitey Ford; Bob Feller, and oh so many more? Some great pitchers played on shitty teams.
There are 59 pitchers in the Hall of Fame currently as of 6/5/09.
