i am considering building a small wooden frame, with a socket for an incandescent lamp for a water heater. i've seen some heaters online that start around $25 each! others at 40 that fit the gallon plastic founts bottom

Explain the lizard heater. I just went to Petsmart, they have a mat but I think it goes under the Rocks. I gues you could buld a small platform, put sand on it and then put the water on that. Just wondering if that is what you are doing. My lows have been about 12 degrees lately. I am tired of getting ice out everyday.
Any help would be great.
Thanks

A mat would work too. There are several different types. The advantage of a lizard heater is they dont get hot enough to catch anything on fire. All you want to do is keep the water above freezing. If you use a rheostat you can control the temperature of the heater if it doesnt have one.

I heat my loft now but before, I made a heater from a clay flower pot and it's base. I elevated the upside down pot with a few ceramic dots glued to the base and placed a 60 watt bulb and holder under. You could control the amount of heat with a light dimmer or just by trial and error by changing the wattage. Helps keep the birds warm and the water from freezing. Note: this rig was were the birds could not touch it.

Guys,
Being a bit of a cheep skate. I could never pay 25 bucks to heat a bowl of water. I go to the dollar store and buy all the cup warmers they have when they have them. Cut two strips of ply wood. Lay next to the 1 dollar mug warmer. Set the bowl on top and your good to below zero. KGB

The point that concerns me using a light as a heat source is it could upset the day/night hormonal balance of the birds and get them to breed constantly.

great feedback guys! velo, i don't think the amount of light escaping from a wooden box will add to the birds daylight clock. hey Bill, do you fly competiton? we're not that far, and was wondering if you're in region 1B.

It is an investment when it comes to buying water heaters. I purchased a heater that have a thermostat six years ago for $30 and still doing the job today and will do the job for the next six years and many more. Look at your cost and the amount of use out of it with the saved electricity cost...and you will be ahead. The thermostat works when the temps dip bellow 38 degrees. In those very cold winter days, you find the birds huddling around the water container to keep warm.
