SO I just recently starting training my birds to trap and feed by shaking the can and playing music. So its only been three days, but during every feeding i play one song(same one) while they feed and shake the can. This afternoon I started up the song, and they actually perked up and started moving toward the trap, then when i started messing with the feed and can they started trapping in.

Thom, i doubt you 'just' rattle a can, c'mon, if Roy can whistle the Marines hymn, you gotta top that! btw, i whistle as i feed, this way if they're really hungry, they can hear me while flying, and will land right away/much faster.

I whistle and shake the feed cam but the only thing about when you have more than one kit box out there they all get too exceided,I guess that I should have called birdie, birdie, birdie for the second kit and something else for the third. Hay Windjammer do your dogs come running when you click your birds. Dennis

Dennis..... I use the clicker as a reward responce. When the dogs does what Iam teaching them and they do it right. I click the clicker and reward them with a treat.
I use a "voice" command along with the clicker to get my dogs to "come" to me when I call them.

Hi Guys,
I shake the feed can and whistle and if that doesn't work I do the kangaroo dance "a hip and a hop" and that generally works. :)

To be perfectly honest, I was hoping one of you would say that you actually gave each of ur birds a cell phone and added them to ur plan, because, frankly, I just dial them up and put them on 10 way. Maybe its just me....

J star, im with you, But since Im still just figuring out this whole portable thing, I apparently do not knnow what hungry is, cause I dont feed them for a 12 hours and they wont come down, give them over 24 hours and the night out in some strange place and oddly enough, they seem to recognize you..... should I stick to once daily feeding. Ill try that

Try giving your birds less feed and only feed them once a day after you fly them. They need to be on a constant schedule. For every 10 birds give them 3/4 cup of feed. Use a measuring cup from your kitchen or purchase the measuring cups for $1 from “Dollar Store”. If the birds don’t come down when you rattle the feed can, cut the feed a little more. I use an instant coffee container as a feed can due to having a lid on the container and allow me to shake the can without spilling the feed. The birds will become accustomed to the sight of the can and they know it is feeding time.

Try whistling the theme song to the Andy Griffith Show, Shake the can like your mixing a good cocktail and keep the hip action going. This will also keep your kit birds from mating in their kitbox. LOL!

Oh you...

The Andy Griffith Show might work, thanks for that.

I will try with the whole measuring bit... i simply can only fly once a week maybe twice, so I try and strictly feed on a once a day schedule in anticipation for flying.

young kits will learn to drop. Me i just say come on. over and over again. They do well most of the time but it just depends on the weather. My comp kits react well to.
Consistancy i guess. Jim Bowen

I dont call to mine. I just stand there with a surprised look on my face, as if to say "What the ....", "You guys want to come back to this?"

Naw, I really dont call to them. I dont open the trap til they are all down (except the one or two knuckle heads), When I open the trap, they all bail inside. Any of them that dont get in, go hungry. Of course when Im first trap training I feed a lil bit at a time so nobody goes entirely without. But after a few days ... they learn it real fast. I do believe they form a little Pavlovian response to the bobs on the trap clinking. IMO its about how you fly them and the early habits they form. 99% of the time all mine are trapped in within 2 minutes. I try to never fly them with any food in their crop.

I never even thought of calling them in. They just come in after they're through flying. They know breakfast is waiting.

Now this is one hilarious, entertaining thread! I'd sure like to see a video of Thom and Scott's methods!

When the're flying I sing the Status Quo
song.
Down Down Deeper and down, inerspersed with rolling and tumbling by Canned Heat. Then to trap them I whistle "No place like home".
Here is a thought, if you could train your birds that it is only safe to drop when a flag is flying.... the judge would always make you take it down before releasing the kit....... hmmmm

Actually it's a real good idea to get them use to your voice or whistle. I was at CR250's house a few weeks ago, when he flew his birds Mr. Cooper came for a visit. He was relentless chasing the kit, he made about 6 runs at them as they tried to land. He came in right at dark and chased them back up really high. If they were not use to his whistle he could have lost the whole kit. They could not see a thing even with the yard lights on. They landed on the loft and on a horse shelter. We had to net 10 or so but we got them all in. Of course we had to have some beers after that. That says a lot for calling them in and getting them use to it.

I just whistle, then utter the word "come." Any noise will do as long as they identity or associate that particular sound to feeding time. They can be retrained to associate different sounds as well. For example, I used to use a plastic whistle, but found it inconvenient so I ended up just whistling with my lip.

Every time i feed my birds I rattle the tin and say come on then.
When breeding comes along and the young birds are starting to eat by them selfs they no that the tin rattling and come on is feed time
Then when they get moved into the kits I shake the tin and shought before feed time.
Doing this every day they no what it relates to.
Always let them out hungry and when your ready to let them in give them the tin and shought.
Once the birds are flying as a kit when there at the hight were they can here me I give them the signal and there in like a flash.
I dont give them any time sitting about on the roof they hit the roof and are straight in the kits.
If I had a nice big garden instead of a yard I would train them to hit the loft roof instead of the house roof first.
well thats me and my way.LOL
