got this hen who just lost a chick. and my question is how long will it take for her to lay again. she hasnt been mated do to raising her young. but we had some rain couple days back and water got into the nest bowl and drowned the chick, so i had to throw the chick and nest bowl out. but how long will this hen be out of it has i would really like to get her back laying as soon as possible. thanks guys in advance!

It could be hard to say this time of year. Are you running artificial lights? , What latitude are you. With a short photoperiod, (such as right now, Dec 21 shortest day of yr) it could be unpredictable when she might re-mate and lay. I would run lights for her, 12 hrs minimum. You said, "she hasnt been mated ..." Do you mean mated or treaded by a cock. If she is truly unmated, she has no cock as a partner, again it could take longer. If you meant treaded, that will happen on a normal schedule.

On a normal schedule, she should lay again in 8-11 days. During peak breeding season, June-July, my donor hens will lay every 9-10 days and fosters lay a new clutch in 30-32 days.
