I just read a post the other day in one of the forums
about mixing vitamin "D" with peanut butter and I can't remember which one it was. Has anyone ever heard about doing this?? It's supposed to give the rodents a heart attack, but not harm anything else. I need to get the mixture of how much vitamin D to use. Can anyone help??

I knew I could count on you guys.... Thanks Mark and Bill. Now with the cold temps arriving Iam seeing some traces of those litter buggers around my feed barrels....lol. I tried just putting peanut butter on the traps and the little critters just licked the peanut butter off and never set off the traps.
Last night I mixed up a batch of the vitamin D potion to give them a SUPRIZE.. I'll post if I can see any kind of results....

The best way to control rodents is a consistent maintenance program that includes snap traps, bar bait, and a few Tin Cats! I have a constant mouse situation that I can only keep in control by this type of regular maintenance. One of the best traps I have used, and I have tried many!, is the Tin Cat. It is a rectangular tin box that has a entrance ramp on each end that the mice go in and up the ramp, but can't get back out. A nice glob of peanut butter in the trap is all that it takes to attract them. This is a live trap so you have to kill the mice yourself, though a few will die inside the trap. I throw the whole thing in a bucket of water when I see mice in it. I have trapped upwards to a dozen mice at a time in the Tin Cat. It costs about $15 and there are cheaper plastic version out there, but not worth it. Using this maintenance type program you will quickly go from catching mature mice to younger mice, and then to only an occasional mouse. But unless you stay on the program it will quickly go back to many mature mice! The best deterrent is no grain left out in feeders or on the ground, or a mouse proof loft- which is almost impossible. Since I also have chickens, parakeets, dove, finches, etc. and my area is an old rural estate neighborhood the mouse problem will never totally go away. But when I stay on top of it the mice are minimal. Enjoy your next fly! Don M. Mac's Rollers LVRC

What about rats? I found they don't go for the tin cats and like WJ said they take the bait right off snap traps most of the time. I don't wish to use poison, so hopefully this Vitamin D recipe works.

I recently had some new homes being built and it displaced the local field rats. I had to get rid of them in a hurry before the neighbors tried to blame me. The fastest solution was to get out the Gamo. The practice didn't hurt either.

There are faster ways to kill rodents other than giving them heart attacks.

The thing I don't like about poisons is that the damn things like to run off and die somewhere else. When I had my rat infestation, I put out some poison and woke up one morning to find a big juicy rat dead in the middle of the culdesac for all the neighbors to see. One well placed shot with the Gamo and they don't leave the yard, except in a trash bag.

Discharging anything over 600F.P.S. in the city where I live is considered a felony-discharing of firearm in city limits. Plus I don't want my dogs or my neighbors getting a hold of any poison. Any other suggestions?

TimP.... If you re-read my original post you will see that the mixture of peanut butter and vitamin D is "NOT" harmfull to any other animals. It only causes heart attacks in the rodents..
Also, if the Gamo that Tracey is talking about is an air assisted rifle, pellet type. You don't get the "BANG" (sound)like a regular rifle or shotgun. I have one, but it is used for the ferrel cats I have a problem with.

I live in L.A. suburbs, Wind I saw just looking for verification from someone else who's tried it. JDA, I called this city police department and they said you will be charged with felony discharging a firearm within city limits, then they got testy and I said goodbye!

You can be charged with a felony any where, it depends on the type of crime if its fedral or state, Air or spring loaded guns are not firearms,I know lol

I have never had a rodent problem in the last 20 years, other than a couple every few years that I noticed when picking up a piece of plywood or somthing that has been sittin for a while near the loft, My lofts are all off the ground and I free range chickens (chickens eat mice)to clean up any wasted grain,As long as they have no where to hide is the key to keeping the mice out, Mice will generally only live in about a 25 foot perimiter, But rats can be a difer storey I know there is nieghborhoods without live stock that have rats, I work for San Bernardino Animal Control and our shelter got infested with rats at one time, Vector Control told us to use bar bait and it will not harm the dogs but make sure you wire it down cause they will take it to there hide out (that need to be elimenated if possable) and not share it with the others (most bar baits have a hole down the center for the wire and PRESTO in a couple of weeks NO rats and "NO DEAD DOGS" (by the rat poison)

Has anyone had a Nutria get in their lofts? I have heard about them and seen pictures but finally saw one in real life several days ago. This joker must have been about 8+ pounds which is a small one. I think the only way you could get rid of them is with a .22 cal..

A Nutria is just a big muskrat. They eat plants.

No. I was driving down the road and the thing ran across the road in front of me and jumped into a irrigation canal. I had always heard about them but it was the first I've seen.

To All, since JDA brought it up I was stuck on finding out for sure how they could charge someone, so I called a friend with some ties. Well the city ordinance has wording that states all residents are aware that if they violate this ordinance that they can be charged with misdimeanor public nuissance, felony public endangerment, and assault with a deadly weapon in certain cases. Basically they going to mess with you hard core, all this is due to the high rise and popularity of air soft guns a few years back. So for the most part the lady I talked to was just throwing her weight around to scare me off. Thanx GTR, I didn't know bait bars didn't hurt dogs, that could be useful.

The Nutria is a large rodent and very powerful, haven't you heard of a "Nutria powered submarine!"
Sorry, I couldn't pass that one up!
