Just took this today... its a pair of nestmates that I have flying which i have a good level of confidence in. They have only been flown a handful of times and this is the second flight since they started tumbling. Pretty short, loose. I received birds back in the summer and this is what im finally trying to fly out of them. I have a kit of 8 squeeks that im working with. Might let them get a taste of being outside of their training cage tomorrow.

Hey thanks. Hopefully over winter break coming up I can get some good ones with some good rolling. They were fairly frequent but nothing amazing.

If I could get my birds to fly with a remote control helicopter, video taping from a birds eye view would be my goal... wouldnt that be sweet

Could anyone tell me what color that barred bird is( im calling it brown bar as it doesnt appear ash red to me)... father is a ash red bar with flecking (carry blue?) and mother is a yellow grizzle... reason for that grizzle nestmate.... at the very end of the video is a good shot

Just watched the video again.Do your birds live in the kitbox or do you keep them in another loft when you aren't flying them?
I am chomping at the bit to start breeding and flying out of portables but need to wait til winter gets over with.Too cold here in Iowa to start breeding them until probably February so keep the videos coming !!!
I'll have 5 pairs to breed out of.A good freind of mine sold me some of his breeding stock. Back in October I went to a Parlor Roller competiton up by his place and we went there after the roll.He let a kit of birds the ones I bought from him produced and they looked great !
Watching your video sure helps fuel the fire !!

They stay in the dog crates full time. I have only had them in their maybe the past 2 weeks. Before that they were flown in a portable and stayed in a loft. I would like to move to a trailer one day, once i fill up the dog crates and have a solid team going that I have confidence in.

Pinwheel,
Are you adding birds as you raise them to the portables? One more question, in one of your other posts you mentioned having problems getting them down because of how you must have fed them.Doing anything different yet?

Mark,

What I have is two large dog crates that I keep them in fulltime. I have the two in one, and 8 squeekers in the other. Essentially, they will be both combined once I actually get the 8 on the wing and working well. So yes, ill be adding them as I get them to the portable. As for the feeding issue. I was in a completely different place and only allowed them a few mins of sitting before letting them out. Their last meal was approx 14 hours prior to that(flew 4 got 3 back... the one bird I lost was always a problem). Since then I have been waiting almost a full 24 hours before releasing them. Both instances they flew well as in the video and the next day they went up for one min then came down looking for food. So Im not real consistent with the food amount yet, but Im starting to be strict with documentation of it all... starting now. Even though I say im flying portable, I have only really been flying at one place. Flying off a high structure gives them limited landing space except for near the box. When I would fly at a soccer field or anywhere else, they landed in trees or elsewhere... But this again has only been with very naive birds. I havent had enough time working with one solid group to jump to conclusions yet. As for getting them to land where I want, it starts with conditioning them to land on the box(fly to box) then rather sitting on it and trapping. That is my new found opionion; So im staring now with the squeekers, letting them come out into the training cage "on the ground". Pull it away from the kit box, then let them walk back in for food. I will be increasing the distance I do this, and eventually lead up to making them fly to it and land for food. I hope this will make them more comfortable with landing on it once I just let them out... because I never condition them to land on it, only to sit on top and trap in... so when it came time they went up, they had no idea what the hell it was they were suppose to do to get back down. Of course this is what I perceive. Whethers its true or not, is for you to judge. Im just having fun...

Thanks for the info and the pictures! All I can do is think about it so reading what and how you and others are going about it is great! We have about 10" of snow after the blizzard went thru here the last couple of days so it seems like it will be forever before I can even pair my birds up so keep the info and your experiences coming. What strain of Rollers are you flying? The breeders I have come down from Plona and Smith birds.

Hey thanks. and Keep inquiring too! No snow here in Florida... weird, is it not? lol... I apparently have mostly pensom, one blue barless hen (smith and Plona) and two cocks from james turner himself. I dont know how much is just heresay, but I guess when I start flying more often I will see if they fly up to those names.

I do want feedback on something I am dreaming up. I rent a room in a house, and ill be moving out around may/june. SO I really do not have options to build nice big lofts or anything remotely permanent. Since the birds are in somewhat cramped conditions,Id say, I was thinking about investing in netting(batting cage style) maybe smaller holes, to hang over a 4 post structure, so the birds can come out and explore and flap their wings... and still be safe from predators. feel its a cheap way of giving them some room to fly at home without the risks... and be portable enough to take with and break down quickly.
