Anybody out there experiencing freezing temperatures?
I overheard meteorological scientists speaking in regards to global climate conditions and they say the Polar Ice caps are melting and there are changes in birds migratory patterns. Temperature in my neck of the woods will be mid 20's tonight. I live in the Bay Area region of northern California and to many of us this is down-right cold. QUESTION: Do we need a climate adaptation strategy in order to survive the "DEEEEP" freeeeze! Marcus Deep Spin Lofts

Cold here in N. central Oklahoma! Below freezing here every night as of lately! Had to up the feed a bit, lost a couple YBs already due to going lite. Hawks are relentless too. EVERYTIME I test the sky, it cost me. Just trying to be patient and not push it. Artic blast forcasted to come in tonight though, ought to up the stress level though! LOL
Personally don't believe in the global warming crap myself, but thats just my opinion!

In the grand Pacific North West (east side of WA) we woke to 0 degrees..supposed to get to 12 today. Same for the rest of the week. Keeps the pellet stove hot, coffee pot working overtime and the birds singing the four part harmony acappella chorus of CORN CORN AND MORE CORN. smile....at least the sun is shinning. ---------- De Oppresso Liber

I read all of your posts and it appears that we are experiencing similar conditions.
3 birds in 2 days are gone (probably a Coopers Hawk). This particular BOP has been around for several days. Hides in trees and sits on my neighbors fence making piercing shrieks.
It's gotten to the point where my birds need to get out in the sun and roll off that late night freeze... but I'm losing my best stuff to these BOP. I lost a nice pearl eyed red badge that took years to develop as a strain here at Deep Spin Lofts (30ft FAST, FREQUENT & STABLE). Was considering stocking this one because I was either getting rolldowns or stiffs from badges lately.
Now Jbow, how in the world do you manage with 1 degree temperatures? Must be very tough ehhh...
I have been back with rollers for several years now and have started to get a little depressed for the 1st time. My squabs are freezing in the nest and other miscellaneous crap is pissing me off. The deep freeze is setting me back after years of hard work. Almost thought abought quitting.... but changed my mind due to the love of the roll (and the birds).
Scott -- So you got snow out there where you live. I heard it snowed in the valley in certain places like Stockton, Davis, Walnut Creek & Concord. Those birds of yours are fine I hope. Very outstanding family Scott. Keep up the good work!

On 12/04, we had snow in Houston and set a record for the earliest snow fall in history. We only had snow on the ground for a day and the lows are back in the seasonal norm of the high 50's low 60's. Tracey

You guys in the warm states haven't seen cold yet. Here in Michigan it has been below freezing all day every day for 3 weeks now, and the news is calling for 6 to 9 inches of snow tonight, how would you like to trade. One thing though, I have been flying almost every day with out having any hawk problems. (knock on wood) the red tails are still living across the road for me in the woods, so far they haven't been any problems. To all you fellow rollers, Have a good Christmas, hope you keep them flying. ---------- Lew

I want to build kit boxes into a shed. probally 9X10, I could then heat the shed with a oil based radiator heater, somewhat inexpensivily I hope, and keep everything just above freezing thru the winter. I would put 3 kit boxes down each side at 3 feet wide. Only down side, is a second loft for breeders. Everything in the planning stage still. ---------- RT Williams

RT, How many kit boxes do you need? My loft is 10x10 and everything is under one roof. I have 3' deep kit boxes on one wall, a 2' aisle and (2)5'x 5' breeding pens on the opposite wall. This set up is great when it's raining. When not breeding you can use the breeding pens as breakups or you can use kit boxes if you have enough. Just an idea. Tracey

Hasnt been above 10 in 5 days. Night time temps between -6 and -22, windchills in the -35 range. Today was the first day since Friday the wind was less than 20 mph. I flew all the birds today, we all enjoyed the 'brisk' Dec day together. LOL about the hose freezing for ya'll. I havent used a hose since October, I just pack a bucket or bottle from the house with warm water. ---------- Jon

Tracey Can you post a picture of your loft. My son flys a his own rollers also. So he needs a couple boxes, and I need 3 or 4. A couple for older birds and a couple for the young birds. I really like Paul's Loft and would consider that. Which is simialr to what you are talking about.
Jon, you are always one upping people or in this case one downing in the temp. LOL Was just talking to a farmer here, that was telling us about a storm in the early 90's in your country. He said the wind chill was minus 90 or something. The storm killed 700 cows or so. Dang that is cold. Stay warm! ---------- RT Williams

Its true, it was 1989. Thousands of cattle, sheep and wildlife literally froze in their tracks. It was horrible to clean-up after. Air temps were like -40 and wind chills -70 for several days, plus it snowed like crazy just before so drifting was huge. I hope it doesnt ever happen like that again.
I heard a saying that I think applies to me and others who live similarly, "If you're gonna be stupid, you'd better be tough". ---------- Jon

Was watching the History Channel the other day and theres evidence of what they called a mini iceage in Northern Europe and England in the 1300-1400s. They said it lasted about a century. They`re all wet with their global warming junk. The question is still raised...Why did they call Greenland,Greenland? Ummm because they used to farm there? We might be on the end of an ice age. As the world temps warm back to where they were a couple of thousnad years ago. I saw some pix in a NatGeo of an Ethiopian warrior from the turn of the century. He was buff like a NFL linbacker. What does that tell you? Weather conditions change in one part of the world affect other parts of the world. The biggest part of the weather is controlled by ocean currents. Currents shift, weather changes. No mystery no global warming. It might be Mother Earth trying to cull some species including us. I know Al Gore(who is projected to be a BILLIONAIRE in the next two years)is old enough to remember the old Parkay commercials...its not nice to fool with Mother Nature. ---------- V99 blue sky single beat in cadance performing now earth beckons the winged drawn breath is let quickly forth orchestral movement follows

I got my snow removaling done. (snow shovel) This morning all that i had done from the house to the loft and to the chickens was all filled back in and lots of drifts to. my drive was to my surprised clear. The wind was out of the wnw all night 25mph and it blew my drive clear. Now i know why they spend all that money on global warming. Geez i'm such a believer now. I've been trying to find my flip flops and short pants and tank tops i'm sure i will have to shovel somemore tomorrow.

I overheard on XM Satellite radio that this very cold weather system is blamed for 17 winter storm deaths in Northern parts of the United States.
That's not good news!
