Do you let your breeders have food in front of them in the non breeding season or do you just give them 2tbs. of food each while they just sit on a perch all day.I am feeding them Purina Nutrena Green pellets year round. Dennis

First of all, I want to say that I fly my breeders when they are not breeding. During breeding season they get all the feed they want in front them. When I fly them, they get fed accordingly. For future references check the "Search" bar this topic has been discussed numerous times in the past.

Thanks Paul but that dose not help me, I cant afford to fly good birds this time of year last Saturday I had a female cooper shake the cage of 10 late hatch that were in a training cage, then she went for the kit 3 times and only got feathers, so flying the few that i have is out of the question. Rookie....in that case I would "only" feed pellets when in the breeding season. The rest of the year I would fed them a good pigeon mix. Problem solved...lol. Unless you feed pellets to all your birds all year long. I would just cut back on the amount for the breeders. Good luck with your decision..

Rookie ,I live in Pennsylvania and I feed a mix of 50 percent nutri green and 50 percent mix seed with corn in the winter, all they can eat in 15 minutes or they get a drink, summer I feed the same without corn, all they can eat,as long as it is cleaned up before nighttime! Hope this helps! I cannot fly my breeders either! Coopers would clean me out within a week! Pat

Rookie...you will find that J.L. Smith and often S. Plona fed good chicken scratch...we are talking New York weather in the winter. I am on the same line as you (Washington State..eastern part) and I use a measuring cup..they get 1 1/2 cups per 10 birds..at least 50% corn when below 20 degrees. I also put barley in there as that is the last grain they will eat. When a few grains of barley is left I know they have all they want. Barley is good protein just does not have carbs. It is best to put your breeders on a ration in the off season and like Longroller said it is also a good idea to up the protien content in the cooler monthes. As for the amount you can play around with that and as long as they are cleaning it up daily they arent getting too much.
