Far be it for me to rain on your parade, but the sport of kings is thoroughbred horse racing or polo. If you are into blood sports let me suggest you enlist in the Army or Marine Corps as an infantryman and then go to combat. You will get your fill of blood pretty quickly, I can promise you.

I think our society is jacked up....we outlaw animal fights where they are injured..but we allow Boxing...how many boxers have died in the ring..or suffered metal issues from getting pounded in the head...or how about Cage fighting..that is full on bar brawling...except you have little gloves and you are not allowed to hit the boys or pull hair....but yet we have laws to protect a dog or chicken from getting injured...
Humans are brutal...we cant stand to not watch something suffering...Thom..how many people on the freeway HAVE to slow down to get a good look at the person killed behind the wheel....
I dont know....I myself dont like to watch suffering myself....Although I dont reall mind chicken fights...or bull fights...because they usually throw the animal on the BBQ when it is done..and they aren't using regular old barn chickens..game cocks are bred to fight...you cant have two or three roosters together like on a farm.....these birds are made to fight...mean as shit...but NATURE bred them that way..in the wild they will fight too..all man did is domesticate them (to a point).
Now a pit bull or dog fight...NO way can I watch that...I think that is horrible...why...not chickens but dogs..because dogs have intelligence....a chicken wont fetch a ball...or walk to the store with me..or lay its head on my shoulder....anyway...I used to think Chicken fighting was cruel...but like everything else I do..I researched it and found that they are what they are in the wild too and they are bred to fight...I have read in the wild...gamecocks...will fight just to fight..and fight other animals too..they are fearless...and they actually train there young to fight too...I believe I had read too..that the knives were intorduced to help rid the suffering...because the knives basically kill pretty fast...and the instinct and nerves keep the chicken going even when the first hit was death..kind of like our pigeons...the Falcon puts in the talons....and the bird is dead..but appears to be alive...but instinct to stay alive is alot stronger in animal then man...and we often forget that most animals are not man.
Anyway...I dont really think it is wrong or right..but I have witnessed Chicken fights in Mexico and it really did not affect me like I thought it would....I have been to bullfights too..again..no problem....but I have seen a dog fight and it made me sick to my stomach..I almost threw up..

Now you got me thinking...Society is messed up...Alcohol is legal..and we get bar fights...domestic disputes and DUI and often with fatality....Cigarettes are legal..Nicotine #1 most addictive drug 100X more addictive then Cocaine that is INJECTED into the cigs...so the smoker once addicted can die a slow death...but that is ok...but yet green bud AKA reefer is illegal.....a natural product not made by man....not physically addictive..but could be habitual...Chocolate has been proven to be habitual or addictive....I dont know..just think its funny how our society is so bas ackwards (ass backwards)
It just cracks me up...alcohol...Known to cause kidney and liver disease..and can be addictive to a select few....but wait...our kids even drink underage...smoke too...and they are both chemically addictive....and has ZERO healing properties...but society is brainwashed to tolerate it because of MONEY!!! Our own US senators and congresman during the hearings on reefer...blamed the reefer for the devils music.(AKA JAZZ and SWING)...and the blacks make the devils music..Well now they have devils music fetivals (AKA JAZZ festivals)..Jazz is what most of our music today goes back too...reefer makes black men want to have sex with white women.(NOW this was a crock of crap...I was embarressed to call myself american when I read about a US Senator making such claims).crazy mexicans get all reefered up and go crazy and have killed people while on the reefer and reefer makes them harder to handle..(how about the way we treated Mexicans back in the day made them get pissed on not take crap from the whiteman while they labored in our fields for almost no compensation)...they blamed a murder in the late 20's on reefer saying that a woman took an axe to her family because she was on the reefer (she was mental)....they even accused the head of the Medical association of being a communist because he was testifying in favor of reefer saying that it was not physically addictive and that there is no proof of any of the aquasations by congress of making people CRAZY...all this is fact..I did a paper on pot in college...and I was actally doing the paper on why it SHOULD be illegal and ended up writing the paper on why is should be...once I dug in and got the facts...and found that Racism, money and Dupont were behind it...just made me angry...anyway....just a little tid bit...and all quotes above are FACT look it up.
Basically the government used fear of the time..and that was RACE..as a way to brainwash society...

Paul, I just can't agree with you on this. I think nature is cruel but with a purpose. All animals will fight for defense or mating rights, even territory but not for the fun of it. Only humans find pleasure in the suffering of others. Yes the morbid gawk at tragedy or is it relief because it's not them? I have a lot of respect for you and your willingness to say the unpopular. Yes I cull and believe strongly in it's necessity but I do not enjoy doing so. I hunt, I fish and I am a meat eating animal. I have several mounted trophies hanging on my wall and I remember the hunt with affection. So, I don't make myself out to be any better. I just hate suffering, human or animal.

Never said I enjoyed it..LOL...have seen it and it did not bother me (game fighting)...but That was when I was in my early 20's...have not been seen it since. Sorry if I came across like I was all for it....just stating my experience with it and what I had learned about game cocks in the wild...anyway...We both have seen plenty of suffering in our careers from some of the bad things we have seen...hell some calls from 15 years ago still give me a sleepless night or two...and of course none of enjoy culling or any type of killing...EXCEPT FOR THE 4X4 I have hanging in my front room....Anyhoo..I was just stating that I had witnessed a game cock fight and once I did the research on how these bird DO FIGHT FOR FUN...I mean in the wild these little SOB'S are viceous little bastards...but anyway...not problemo..just one thing we dont see eye to eye on...but we agree on hundreds.....Have a Merry Xmas you old Smoke Eater!!

I am one that feels that our government sticks their nose in my business far too often but I think the dog fights,cock fights and any other sport that makes the animals fight to the death is cruelty. If there is another alternative that doesnt harm the animals I am all for it. Just not inerested in seing the fight to the death. Joe

Yes Joe that was my point an alternative with this "gamecock boxing" none of the birds will be hurt and or die from it like in the cockfighting using knifes.

The big difference between boxing and gamecock fighting is that we conciously choose to fight even though we know the consequences may be fatal; and we are supposed to be intelligent.
I don't think that animals have any thoughts about what may happen it is just instinct.
Having said all that I am in training for my first cage fight. I'm so pumped up for it, I don't think that canary will last the first round.

Good luck in your fight...The California Kid (Faber) is a good friend of mine and Mark Munoz (filipino wrecking machine) is also a good buddy...You guys are nuts....My roomate is a 2x All American in wrestling and a UC Davis assistant wrestling coach and he too is going to start the cage.....I dont know how you guys do it....I was a bad ass in my youth..but I cant turn it on just to fight...I need to be pushed..LOL...but again..good luck to you...

I think it's easy to judge something that you really dont have a insight in too. I mean on lookers could say we are cruel to breed a pigeon that could roll to the groud or injure itself, basically breeding a defect for our own enjoyment. My grandfather fought chickens and so did my uncles. They raised their birds with the upmost care, they were pampered and taken care of like you would not believe. they were were free ranged as chicks and were not fought until their second year, and Ive seen turkey farms in Missouri were birds are crammed inside dark amonia filled sheds, and birds that showed defects were drug out by their neck and beaten on the ground. My point is what is more cruel? which bird has a better life? I am not arguing for cockfighting at all, it is illegal, but I think we should fully understand it before we can judge it. not trying to seem insensitive or ruffle feathers, just wanted to express another side of it. We use animals for our own gain all the time, but I think the respect their shown determines cruelty.

i remember the chickens we had as a kid would fight here and there. And we would sit on the swing set and observe. they would get down right bloody.

IMO, to draw an unbiased opinion for or against cockfighting, you have to attend a cockfight in person. IMO cockfighting is not as cruel as most would think. There are also different types of weapons that are used, some will make fights last longer than others. I prefer the Filipino long knife fights which tend to be very short.

The only problem I see with the boxing proposal is the talk about betting. This is the number one reason cock fighting is illegal, it is not the cruelty to animals. The betting aspect of the sport has always attracted unsavory characters. The lust for money has caused the use of drugs in the sport.
The gloves that would be used, have been around forever. They are used to spar birds. There really isn't a need for the scoring vest because an educated eye can see the strikes and score the points.
