Is it possible to creat a new line of roller with 2 birds? Geneticaly speaking, can it be done. When I say a new line, I mean just a complete different bird. Example: if breeding say 2 diff pure roller birds and then down the line you have a fantail or a oriental roller. That would be a new line of a roller bird.

You should not get a Fantail or a Oriental if breeding from two pure Birmingham Rollers at all. But now in days you don't know what some cross them with.
If you get a Oriental Roller and cross it to a Fantail will that shold be a different line.
Paul, your a master in Genetics you know the answer better than us.
Is a trick question right?
Roller= Birmingham Roller, Turkish Tumbler, West of England, Oriental Roller, Toghie Tumbler to name a few.
Cross any of this two and it's a new line of rollers. So yes it's possible.

hay paul, that would be a wrong thing to do because your putting 2 different breeds together and their ain't pure breed birds......... ---------- Donny James "Fly The Best And Cull The Rest" "Saying One Thing;Doing Its Another" "Keep Your Head Planted In The Sky And Wings Spanned Wide" 1996 Piedmont Roller Club Lifetime Achievement Recipient Portsmouth Roller Club Participation Award System Recipient 1994 '96 '97 And 2000 2001 Limestone,Ohio Sportsman's Club Lifetime Member Recipient 2002Portsmouth Roller Club Certified Judge 2004Portsmouth Roller Club Lifetime Member Recipient "Miss Portsmouth"NBRC/90/J311 Rusty Dun Check Self Hen First Bird To Get Certified In Portsmouth Roller Club History With A Score Of 53 Judge By Joe Roe The 1993 World Cup Winner And John Bender The 1994 World Cup Winner

Im no expert in genetics. You sure gave me a good laugh. Do I know the answer I think I do, but never done on birds. As far getting a fantail or Oriental was just to point ( a different bird ). The new bird would be a roller in this case.

You could say you have a new breed of Fantail or a new breed of roller, but you could never say you have a Birmingham Roller.

It could happen. Where do we think fantails or orientals came from initially (differentiation proposed and described by Darwin). Who knows how many generations it would take. A mutation could occur right away or never, it would be a random occurance.
It would require selective breeding to maintain or establish it. Unless there is a survival benefit of have additional tail feathers there would be no selective forces to select for that trait naturally. ----------

If it were easy, everybody would do it

Jon I think you are in the right track...... Mutation.....Im hoping that some of the Master Breeders out there, share some light on this subject. Whether by first hand experience or heard or read of it.
