When I feed and checked my birds today. I noticed a couple birds with what looked like poop on thier beaks. I grabed them and they felt fine physically, and wiped, what I guess is pigeon snot from them.
I checked for canker but did not see anything. They did have a liguid in theirthroats that looked like snot.
Do pigeons get colds and what can I do for it?

Thanks

It probably really was pigeon poop. They do eat their own droppings sometimes (coprophagia), lots of animals do. I suspect it is because something is lacking in their diet. I notice it far more in the kitbirds than breeders. I have noticed if I grit them a little more often and add 1/4 tsp of iodized salt to a gal of water, it drops way down. I also try to scrape more regularly when I see them doing it, it just bugs me ... lol

To be safe, I would isolate those showing the symptoms you describe, but I would not medicate unless you see other symptoms too, like loss of appetite or weight, reluctance to fly, etc. Medicating for canker is fine, but all pigeons have a little canker all the time. I dont know that what youve described is canker though.

You are probally right. I wanted to Worm them. I never have wormed them. So I pulled the grit the first of the month. I am tight with it anyway. I used a wormer 2 weeks ago, and was gong to do it again tomorrow. So maybe that is the problem. I will see what happen in a few days.

I do not think it is canker. I have never had a problem with canker, and there is no canker growth, just runny noses. I am keeping an eye on it though.

I hate to medicate to much, and really I have a enough young birds right now that I think i would cull the weak first.

Thanks

The discharge isn't really sticky, just runny and wet, whitish in color, not transparent. I couldn't even notice it until I picked them up.
I have never checked the hardness of the beaks. I will check some healthy birds, tomorrow and then check the ones that have the "cold".
When I did my rounds today all were heathy and I did not see poop on any beaks. But I had limited time. Tomorrow I can spend more time, and be more observant.

Thanks All
