I typically dont initiate posts and I am hesitant to start this one because I dont want to sound arrogant or self serving. However, I want to tell someone who can appreciate this ...
I witnessed a full turn from my kit a couple days ago!
There have been a few times when all the birds did something. This was different. Ill tell ya what happened;
I released the kit, 22 of them, they flew around low for a couple of laps, 30 seconds or so. A few of them flipping and spinning, nothing special. They then began to climb. Spiraling upward on a left wing to a height of about 150-175 feet or so. It took about 2 minutes, nobody twitched, flinched or bobbled. Absolutely nothing, except flying, which for this kit is quite unusual, so I took special notice.
Their spiral widened a bit as they got higher, as they turned back towards the loft, over the house, BAA-AAAHM they hit the wall and dropped. I had time enough to scan through the kit and back again. They averaged something around 25 ft, the shallowest going just under 20' and the deepest going nearly 40'. As best my eyes can tell, they all rolled and hit it hard.
As I stood there, trying to convince myself what I had seen, I wondered if I would have scored it a full-turn. They definately all went at once, together, no doubt about that. There could have been one that I didnt see which wasnt full-on spinning. I am a chicken heart and would have given a full-turn minus 1, just to be safe. But I swear that I didnt detect any of them holding back not spinning clean.
As I said, I dont want to pat myself on the back about this, but it was pretty great to see. I want to share this story with those ppl who recognize the gravity of the event. I have been flying rollers for 9 years. I have had times where all birds did something, but I didnt consider it a full turn, because some didnt go right together, others fluttered and turned back, while other times there were marginal depth rollers ... until this time. Now if I only can persuade them to do it again, hopefully with someone else watching ....
Thanks all for letting me share. ----------
Jon

There is no judge in the world that would score it a full turn no matter what. There just ain't any with the balls. Some would even find it difficult to score it a 3/4 turn no matter what.
I have never had my birds do a full turn, but I have seen someone else's kit do it. It has been done, Jon. You have nothing to hide; nothing to be hesitant of saying. Your kit did a full turn and I am proud for you. ------------------------------------------ "Left leaning communist pinko @#%* and Masturbator" ------------------------------------------ Nick Siders

I've seen it many times. And I would score a full turn if ever under a kit that did one clean, crisp and unmistakeable. To date I haven't seen one while judging, which is usually the case for most people....they do it when its only you in the yard.

Jon,
thank you for sharing that. Is this John Farr? I have spoken to Scott a few times since the WC and he has spoken most glowingly about your team.
Nick, if you want a full turn scored, I would score it if I saw it. I believe other judges would as well.
The thing is, I have not seen it.
Best Regards,
Ken

It was interesting to see in the K Payne article from 1928 printed in the new NBRC Bulletin, that he reported on a fly they had in Harborne, England, I believe. He reported a large number of full turns in the winning kit and many full turns in many of the competitors' kits. But he also defines a turn much more loosely than we do today....The point is, though, it was not some lofty objective that was "un-achievable" or that judges didn't dare report. Thanks for having the kahunas to report what you saw in your birds, Jon, even though there are guys out there going, "Yeah, right!".

Jon A couple of days ago....oo, most of us can't remember that far back, are you sure it wasn't just a dream?..lol Yes, in golf they have a hole-in-one, doesn't happen very often but it happens. Birds are feeling good this time a year, they have been feed good during the winter months and not flown as much. We spend many hours under our own kits and see much more than those who come on a given day do. Bwinward

Jon That is awesome. I am hoping to be there in a few years. Right now my birds fly for an hour and do nothing so a 5 bird break would be nice. Congrats on the full turn. ---------- RT Williams

No Todd.. actualy no 3/4 turns were scored in the Nationials as none even came close.. if I give one I make darn sure it was there.. it is just to critical to the fly not to be absolutly positive.. I have given one or two out of hundreds.. and trust me .. they earned it... 15 plus birds doing it correctly all at the same time is quite a feat.
Cliff.. those were off of competition Tumbler fly rules. ---------- Scott Campbell

They are mixed ages. The oldest is an '04 (hen). Theres a cpl of '05 there, 1 - '06, zero '07, about 10 or so '08 and half a dozen '09. Its a mixed sex kit. The '09s vary month to month, depends on who can hang in there or not, some them still developing/changing quite a bit. Im not pushing for performance this time of year, but with cold weather and such, they gotta be kinda tough to stay up with the older birds and it changes them quick. ----------

Hey Jon, So what your saying is we are all in trouble again this year!! I will call a full turn if I see it and haven given many 3/4 turns in competition. I have never seen a full turn in competition. That doesn't mean I never will. KGB

Nah, nobodys in trouble this year. Ive been giving too many away trying to get guys over here going, Besides, they still have the same, sorry, manager as always. Ive heard he can be a real bone-head sometimes. If I want them to be good Ill probably have to have my wife fly them ...
Ken, Ive seen your teams and Beavers and Brads over the years, I realize I have a ways to go yet to cause concern for you guys.
I heard Hayes WC kit a cpl yrs ago could do it but only had 17 or 18 birds in kit, something like that.
This was the first Ive seen that I thought was legitimate in 9 yrs, competition or otherwise. So I doubt Ill see one in a competition any time soon, but it would be cool if I did. I have never given or seen scored a 3/4. Although thinking back, I should have probably scored one for Dirk a few yrs ago. I think I gave it a 13 or 14. But even before the fly was over I knew I should have probably awarded it bigger. ----------
