Hey all, I hope a few of you guys can help. I have two nest mates about 3 weeks old that are suffering from something. They are off balanced and their necks are out streatched, eye's alert. The parents attempted to feed them, but the babies will not feed. I noticed this last night, and if they look the same this morning, I plan to kill them both. They are in a heated loft, food clean and dry, and water clean, grit and oster shell available. All other birds look fine, altho a few of my breeders look light and are late in laying. I wormed the breeders prior to putting them together, no other meds given. There are 10 pair in a 14x20 loft, dirt floor. I hope you guys can tell me what may be the trouble and what to treat for.I got to knock this in the bud before in gets worse.. Thanks, Dale

Check for cancer as Scott stated and get rid of the dirt floor ASAP. You will thank yourself in the long run. Joe ---------- J.M.Urbon Lofts A Proven Family of Spinners http://www.freewebs.com/jmurbonlofts/

Dale, Question! is your loft rodent proof?? You stated that you have dirt floors. I'm assuming your loft is constructed right off the ground. If so you could very well have a case of paratyphoid running through your loft. Rodent urine and or droppings are a pigeon fanciers night mare irregardless of a dry floor. Have you introduced any new birds to the flock? If the birds are haviving equillibrium problems they are at an acute stage. I would kill the young ones and get the feces tested or run baytril on the breeders and going the complete cycle and follow up with some probiotics such as primilac. Good luck to you and I hope this helps.
P.S you can look down there throat to see if canker is present at an acute stage where by they won't eat because they are extremely infected and if so you can try ridzol or spartrix but the catch 22 is you would need to run a small tube down thier throat attached to a syringe to treat them.

Thanks for the advice guys. I killed the young birds and started the others on 4 in 1 meds. Foys suggested I treat with Amoxicillin, so ordered that and should have it in a few days. These were the only 2 of 14 babies that were showing signs of anything wrong, the other young birds look great. No signs of Canker. I know I got to get the floor finished, it's a new breeding loft, all complete except the floor, but was waiting on warmer weather to pour the concrete.
