I finally released my young birds from hawk lock down today. Every thing went really smooth. The morning was crisp and cool with a beautiful blue sky. Plenty of crows in the area and I felt confident. They got up for a good 45min and were very excited to be out. Not a BOP in sight today, thank heavens. They flew nice a tight together and even broke as a kit twice. Unfortunately we had a roll down when all of the birds came in. This particular bird has done this twice now and always very close to the ground. He seemed a little dazed but not broken. I am wondering what to do with him now?
(Moderated) Any suggestions would be nice. Thanks

i think you should rest him and give him another chance. btw, how did you get your birds ready for release? did you do anything to get them into shape?

Not particularly. Kept them a little light on the feed and backed off the popcorn for two days. They really seemed energetic today though. I was happy with the results, Id really like to get a few more kit birds but am still in the process of finding some I'd like to get into.

Pogohawk, all that i've read so far says to take a few weeks to get the birds lean and mean after a lengthy lockdown. i'm sure your birds are fine, but i'd like mine to be strong enough to outfly any sky sharks that maybe lingering around. i plan on taking at least 3 weeks to get my kitbirds into flying shape. first cutting their mix feed with 1/4 barley for one week, then increasing the barley to 1/2 ration for another week. final week strictly 50/50 red wheat/white milo, with some peas or mix tossed in.
